Tasting Notes

Appearance

Brilliant pale gold with green highlights, displaying excellent clarity and viscosity that reflects the wine's careful oak maturation and coastal vineyard origins.

Aroma

The nose reveals beautifully integrated aromas of tropical pineapple, ripe mango, and papaya, complemented by vibrant citrus notes and baked apples. Subtle nuances of vanilla, honey, and toasted oak add depth and complexity, whilst hints of butter contribute richness to the aromatic profile, showcasing the signature velvety character achieved through sur lie ageing with monthly bâtonnage.

Palate

Medium to full-bodied with a silky, creamy texture, the palate delivers explosive flavours of tropical fruits, citrus, and baked apple that delicately intertwine with vanilla and honey notes. The wine's structure is beautifully balanced, with the oak influence (47% French, 46% American) adding subtle toasted oak and butter characters that round out the long, lingering finish. Crafted from over 1,000 vineyard lots across Monterey, Mendocino, and Santa Barbara counties, this Chardonnay elegantly reflects its cool coastal heritage with refined complexity ideal for discerning palates.

Pairs With

This versatile Chardonnay pairs beautifully with roasted chicken, grilled lobster, creamy pasta dishes, pan-seared scallops, baked salmon, aged Gruyère or mature cheddar, Caesar salad, and rich seafood bisques.

Winemaking Notes

Crafted from sustainably farmed coastal vineyards across Monterey County (49%), Mendocino County (32%), and Santa Barbara County (19%), this wine is meticulously fermented and aged in oak barrels from over 1,000 individual vineyard lots to create a complex, balanced blend. Each small vineyard lot is carefully guided throughout the entire winemaking process, with Kendall-Jackson's signature sur lie ageing and monthly bâtonnage (lees stirring) contributing to the wine's velvety, silky texture and creamy flavour profile. The wine is aged for 4 months in a combination of 47% French oak (4% new) and 46% American oak (6% new), allowing the oak to integrate seamlessly whilst preserving the vibrant fruit character. This careful balance of new and seasoned oak barrels adds subtle vanilla, honey, and toasted oak notes without overwhelming the wine's natural tropical fruit and citrus expression.

Vintage Conditions

The 2023 vintage in California's cool coastal regions provided excellent conditions for Chardonnay production, with moderate temperatures and maritime influences ensuring optimal flavour development and natural acidity retention. The diverse vineyard sites across Monterey, Mendocino, and Santa Barbara counties benefited from their unique microclimates and soil types, carefully matched to the Chardonnay varietal to maximise quality and expression. Kendall-Jackson's four-decade commitment to sourcing grapes exclusively from California's cool, coastal vineyards ensured that the 2023 fruit displayed the vibrant tropical fruit characters, citrus notes, and elegant structure that have made Vintner's Reserve America's top-selling Chardonnay for over three decades. The vintage's favourable conditions, combined with meticulous vineyard management and sustainable farming practices, have produced a Chardonnay of exceptional balance, complexity, and refinement.
