Greenock Creek Alices Shiraz 2023 Barossa Valley is a distinguished full-bodied Australian Shiraz crafted from vines planted in 1997 on ancient slaty siltstone mixed with dark brown clays and loam. This exceptional terroir imparts distinctive character to the wine, with the siltstone contributing midpalate spiciness and savoury tannins, whilst the brown clay lends chocolate and mocha notes alongside vibrant raspberry and redcurrant fruit—creating a particularly food-friendly Shiraz.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Deep crimson with purple hues, displaying excellent colour intensity and viscosity that hints at the wine's concentrated nature and full-bodied structure.

Aroma

The nose is generous and inviting, revealing layers of redcurrants, blueberries, and dark cherries. Complementing the fruit are notes of baking spices, dark chocolate, mocha, and subtle citrus blossom, creating a complex and indulgent aromatic profile.

Palate

Full-bodied and luxurious, the palate delivers concentrated spicy fruit with blackberry, black cherry, and satsuma plum flavours. The ancient siltstone terroir expresses itself through distinctive midpalate spiciness, whilst supple yet structured tannins provide excellent framework. Chocolate-dipped cherries, raspberries, and blueberry pie notes add richness and depth. The finish is satisfying, lingering, and pure, with liquored cherry and plum characters that persist beautifully.

Pairs With

This food-friendly Barossa Shiraz pairs beautifully with slow-roasted lamb shoulder with rosemary and garlic, grilled ribeye steak with peppercorn sauce, braised beef short ribs, mature cheddar or aged Gouda, and dark chocolate torte with berry compote.

Winery & Vintage Info

Winemaking Notes

The long rows in this vineyard produce plush, voluptuous fruit from vines planted in 1997 on ancient slaty siltstone mixed with dark brown clays and loam. Greenock Creek has refined their viticulture approach by cutting back the vines and transitioning to rod and spur pruning, which delivers enhanced freshness. For the 2023 vintage, only fruit from the long rows was selected, as the short rows—whilst capable of producing excellent grapes with more savoury, linear characteristics and coffee-mocha notes—are being managed to better balance those savoury tendencies with clearer fruit expression. The wine matured in American oak, 15% of which was new.

Vintage Conditions

The 2023 vintage in the Barossa Valley presented favourable growing conditions that allowed the Alices vineyard's distinctive terroir to express itself fully. The ancient siltstone and brown clay soils imparted their characteristic signatures to the fruit: the siltstone contributing mid-palate spiciness and savoury tannins, whilst the brown clay lent chocolate and mocha spectrum notes alongside vibrant raspberry and redcurrant fruit. The focused selection of fruit from the long rows, combined with the refined pruning regime, resulted in concentrated, plush fruit with excellent freshness and balance—hallmarks of this exceptional vintage.
