Winemaking Notes

Josef Chromy Pinot Gris 2025 is crafted from grapes sourced from selected blocks of the Relbia vineyard in the Tamar Valley, along with parcels from Tasmania's East Coast, picked in mid-March 2025 at optimal ripeness and flavour development. Following a short maceration on skins, the fruit was gently pressed. The free-run juice, valued for its purity and freshness, was fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel to preserve its delicate nature, whilst the pressings were fermented separately. A small portion of the pressings was then incorporated back into the final blend for added texture, body and palate weight in a true Alsatian Gris style. A small percentage (3%) of Gewurztraminer was co-fermented to add aromatic complexity. Bottled in late winter, this wine was released just in time for spring enjoyment.

Vintage Conditions

The 2025 vintage in Tasmania experienced fairly consistent seasonal conditions across the island, with above-average (but not hot) temperatures and lower than average rainfall. These seasonal conditions resulted in an earlier and condensed vintage, but supported great yields and high quality fruit. The Tamar Valley and East Coast sites provided ideal cool-climate conditions for Pinot Gris, allowing the grapes to develop the delicate aromatics of pear, honeysuckle and white peach whilst retaining natural acidity and achieving optimal ripeness. The vintage produced wines with excellent texture, body and the gentle phenolic tension characteristic of premium Tasmanian Pinot Gris in the Alsatian style.
