The 2021 Elderton Shiraz from Barossa Valley presents a full-bodied profile and traditional opulence. Its deep, vibrant purple colour is complemented by aromas of red liquorice and subtle spiced plum notes. On the palate, it reveals rich red fruit flavours and layered plum depth, accented by spicy clove undertones. The wine finishes with a smooth, persistent length, supported by chalky tannins balanced by succulent red fruit sweetness.

Winery & Vintage Info

The fruit for this Shiraz was traditionally sourced from the Elderton vineyard situated on the banks of the North Para River, Nuriootpa, Barossa Valley, South Australia. Today, this wine includes fruit from the three exceptional estate vineyards that the Ashmead family own.

Elderton was transformed from a vineyard supplying quality fruit to other wineries to a winery in its own right in 1982, and have since won much recognition for all of the wines, especially the Shiraz. Barossa Shiraz is now highly collectable worldwide, and the Elderton is always a benchmark for the region.

The 2021 vintage Barossa Estate Shiraz fruit is sourced from many parcels across three vineyard sites. These vineyards ripen differently owing to their different aspects, elevation and soil types. The Greenock vineyard is on the western end of the Barossa, first to ripen for them and always brings a vibrant bouquet and punchy tannin to their blend. The Nuriootpa plantings bring a depth of tannin and a lovely sweet spiced fruit element and the Craneford vineyard is a more elevated site on leaner soils ripening later in the season.

"2021 signalled a welcome return to a more ‘normal’ season, with decent winter rains and only a very mild frost in the spring of 2020. A mild summer without heat spikes allowed for excellent ripening conditions leading into harvest. The apparent lack of rain meant keeping a close eye on vine health to ensure water requirements were met. The return to decent yields afforded the opportunity to use heading boards and a little barrel ferment to add complexity to this wine. Post fermentation the parcels were put to a combination of new and used French and American oak for malolactic fermentation and maturation before blending.
Made from our three vineyards, this is truly an expression of Barossa, from one side to the other! We love the way these three vineyard sites work together to create a wine with structure, fruit and freshness." Winemakers - Jules Ashmead & Brock Harrison
