Tasting Notes

Appearance

This distinguished McLaren Vale Shiraz Viognier presents a bright, deep ruby colour with brilliant clarity and rich depth, displaying the exceptional quality characteristic of small batch, hand-crafted fruit from d’Arenberg’s estate vineyards, showcasing the artisanal craftsmanship of Chief Winemaker Chester Osborn and Senior Winemaker Jack Walton.

Aroma

The nose is lifted and expressive, with black cherries, ripe blackberries, dark chocolate and a hint of mocha creating a sophisticated and layered aromatic profile. The co-fermentation of 95% Shiraz with 5% Viognier adds a perfumed lift and aromatic complexity that is the hallmark of this McLaren Vale first — the region’s original Shiraz Viognier blend.

Palate

Generous and richly layered, the palate showcases concentrated dark fruits alongside dark chocolate, Dutch liquorice and subtle thyme, providing savoury undertones that add complexity and depth. Juicy, mouth-coating tannins drive a long, powerful finish, highlighting the wine’s full-bodied character. Ten months in old French oak, aged on lees with no racking, fining or filtration, delivers exceptional purity and texture.

Pairs With

This exceptional McLaren Vale Shiraz Viognier is a natural companion to slow-roasted lamb, char-grilled beef, duck confit, rich game dishes, aged hard cheeses, or hearty Mediterranean-inspired fare, making it ideal for special occasions and long, leisurely dining that calls for a wine of genuine power and complexity.

Winemaking Notes

d’Arenberg The Laughing Magpie Shiraz Viognier 2019 is crafted in small batches by Chief Winemaker Chester Osborn and Senior Winemaker Jack Walton using traditional, hands-on techniques. Grapes are gently crushed and transferred to open fermenters, where the Viognier and Shiraz are co-fermented together — a technique that integrates the aromatic lift of Viognier directly into the Shiraz. Foot treading is undertaken two thirds of the way through fermentation before the wine is basket pressed and transferred to old French oak to complete fermentation and mature for ten months. The barrel ferments are aged on lees with no racking until final blending, and no fining or filtration, ensuring exceptional purity and authenticity of character. Technical details: Alc/Vol 14.5% · pH 3.46 · TA 6.9 g/L · Residual Sugar 1.6 g/L. Harvest dates: 19 February – 27 March.

Vintage Conditions

The 2019 vintage in McLaren Vale was a season of challenge and exceptional quality. Winter was quite dry, with sporadic light showers that didn’t penetrate the soil deeply, impacting budburst and requiring careful irrigation management. A strong wind event during spring flowering disrupted some growth, particularly in Shiraz. Summer brought extreme heat, with a record high temperature of 46.6°C that affected some varieties, though Shiraz largely escaped unscathed. Yields were down across most varieties, but the quality was excellent, exhibiting very strong varietal characteristics. The concentration of flavour from the reduced yields and extreme heat produced fruit of exceptional intensity, though ferments were taken off slightly earlier due to higher sugar levels and strong tannins. The result is a wine of outstanding depth, power and complexity that is a true reflection of this remarkable McLaren Vale vintage.
