Winemaking Notes

Ad Hoc Avant Gardening Cabernet Malbec 2021 is crafted from fruit hand-picked from the Riversdale vineyard in Frankland River, Western Australia — planted in 1997 on north-facing deep gravels over clay, a site of exceptional cool-climate terroir and Cabernet Sauvignon character. Fruit was sorted on the sorting table before being crushed to static stainless steel fermenters, with alcohol fermentation lasting three weeks with very gentle maceration — the extended time on skins allowing for the softening of tannins that defines the wine’s fine, supple texture. Components were aged in a combination of new and 1–2 year old French oak barrels prior to blending and bottling in August 2022 — delivering a Cabernet Malbec of outstanding cool-climate vibrancy, cedary complexity and enduring Frankland River distinction.

Vintage Conditions

The 2021 vintage in Western Australia was exceptional — rainfall falling at just the right times to deliver outstanding fruit quality across the state’s key wine regions. Cabernet and Shiraz from Frankland River were exceptional, with outstanding tannin and colour, whilst Chardonnay and Pinot from the sub-region of Porongurup were equally impressive. Ad Hoc sources fruit from Margaret River, Pemberton and the regions of the Great Southern — leveraging deep knowledge of these regions and long-standing relationships with grape growers to find the best vineyards for each variety. The Riversdale vineyard in Frankland River, planted in 1997 on north-facing deep gravels over clay, delivered Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec of exceptional cool-climate character and concentration in 2021 — a vintage of genuine distinction and enduring Western Australian wine quality.
