Winemaking Notes

Catalina Sounds Sauvignon Blanc 2024 is sourced from the estate in the Waihopai Valley and a handful of long-term growers, with over 60% of fruit from the Southern Valleys where a higher proportion of clay creates wines with mineral focus and mid-palate texture, and the remaining 40% from the central and lower Wairau areas where free-draining alluvial soils express classic herbaceous, citrus and subtle tropical aromas. All vineyards and sub-blocks are kept as separate as possible — freshly pressed juice cold settled and clarified for several days before racking and fermenting at cooler temperatures with selected yeasts in stainless steel. A small portion of estate juice is fermented in large, seasoned oak cuves to add texture and mid-palate weight, before all components are left to rest on lees prior to grading and blending. Bottled in September with no animal products used — vegan friendly. 13.5% alc. 750ml.

Vintage Conditions

The 2024 vintage in Marlborough was truly remarkable — marked by dry, warm weather, with a significant late season frost and a cooler start to flowering in December creating low yields across much of the region. Estate and grower blocks were on average 25–30% down, with a surprising number of Sauvignon vineyards yielding single digits. With no disease pressure and the driest summer in Marlborough for over 90 years, harvest commenced on 13 March and was completed by 30 March — the earliest and quickest harvest in many years. Pristinely clean fruit with smaller than usual bunches delivered a Catalina Sounds Sauvignon Blanc of exceptional concentration, mineral focus and outstanding Marlborough distinction.
