Winemaking Notes

Buttermans Track Syrah 2022 is crafted with minimal chemical and technological intervention, showcasing the philosophy that has guided the winery since 2008. The wine displays deep, inky cherry purple colour with elegant aromas of cracked pepper and berry fruit characteristics, demonstrating the premium quality winemaking approach. Buttermans Track Wines is owned and operated by Gary, Louise and Joel Trist, with the vineyard and winery located in the heart of St Andrews on the edge of the Yarra Valley. The 0.74 hectares of Shiraz clone PT23 was planted on ungrafted rootlings in 1991, with an additional small planting in 1998 also on ungrafted rootlings. All vines are trained to the VSP trellis system with one cordon wire and two moveable foliage wires, cane pruned and hand harvested to ensure the best quality fruit. The wine showcases rich spicy fruit with dark berries, integrated ripe tannins, structured palate, supple feel and exotic complexity with well integrated oak, creating exceptional balance and depth.

Vintage Conditions

The 2022 vintage in the Yarra Valley produced exceptional conditions for Syrah, resulting in wines with deep, inky cherry purple colour and elegant aromas of cracked pepper and berry fruit characteristics. The cool climate wine growing region of St Andrews, part of the Yarra Valley approximately 40 kilometres east of Melbourne, creates ideal conditions for elegant Syrah with rich spicy fruit and dark berries. The vineyard at 180m above sea level with general north-to-north westerly aspect ensures excellent fruit quality with integrated ripe tannins and structured palate. The 2022 vintage showcases supple feel and exotic complexity with well integrated oak, demonstrating the exceptional quality of this cool-climate Australian region. The topography ensures drainage of cold air during frost risk periods, with vine rows oriented north-south to take advantage of sunlight inception in this cool climate vineyard. Gary Trist, viticulturist and winemaker with Masters in Wine Science and Viticulture from University of Melbourne, designed a state of the art Gravity Flow Winery. The 2022 vintage represents the premium quality that Buttermans Track has been producing with minimal intervention, showcasing Syrah as an outstanding expression of cool climate Yarra Valley winemaking.
