Collection: Wild Duck Creek Estate | Heathcote, Victoria
Wild Duck Creek Estate — Heathcote’s Most Iconic Winery
Wild Duck Creek Estate is one of Victoria’s most celebrated, distinctive, and genuinely iconic wine producers — a Heathcote estate established in 1974 that has spent five decades producing wines of extraordinary depth, power, and character from one of Australia’s most remarkable and historically significant wine regions. Home of the legendary Duck Muck Shiraz — one of the most sought-after and critically acclaimed wines in Australia — Wild Duck Creek Estate is a producer that has defined what Heathcote Shiraz can be at its most extraordinary and uncompromising.
History & The Anderson Family
Wild Duck Creek Estate was established in 1974 by the Anderson family, who recognised the extraordinary potential of the Heathcote region for producing wines of world-class quality from its ancient Cambrian greenstone soils. The estate is named in tribute to the wild ducks that inhabit the creek running through the property — a connection to the natural landscape that is reflected throughout the estate’s wine names, from the flagship Springflat Shiraz and the iconic Duck Muck to the Ducks & Drakes Cabernet, the Red Duck GSM, the Yellow Hammer Hill SMC, the White Duck, the Mallard Riesling, Alan’s Cabernets, and the Grandpa Duck Cabernet Shiraz — a tribute to founder David Anderson (affectionately known as Grandpa Duck), crafted from his two favourite varieties.
Over five decades, Wild Duck Creek Estate has built a reputation for producing wines of extraordinary concentration, complexity, and ageing potential — wines that consistently attract the attention of Australia’s most respected critics and that have earned the estate a devoted following among collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate the power and character of Heathcote Shiraz at its most authentic and uncompromising.
The Region: Heathcote & the Cambrian Greenstone
Heathcote is one of Victoria’s most celebrated and geologically distinctive wine regions — a small town and wine region approximately 120 kilometres north of Melbourne, whose extraordinary reputation for producing Shiraz of world-class quality is built on one of the most remarkable geological foundations of any wine region in the world: the ancient Cambrian greenstone.
The Cambrian greenstone of Heathcote is among the oldest wine-growing soils on earth — a metamorphic rock formed over 500 million years ago during the Cambrian period, when the region was covered by a shallow sea. The weathering of this ancient rock over hundreds of millions of years has produced a distinctive red-brown clay loam soil of extraordinary mineral complexity, low fertility, and exceptional free-drainage that is ideally suited to viticulture. The low fertility of the Cambrian greenstone naturally limits vine vigour and yields, concentrating the flavour and character of the fruit and producing wines of extraordinary depth and intensity. The free-draining nature of the soil prevents waterlogging and encourages the vine roots to penetrate deeply into the ancient rock in search of water and nutrients, developing the complex mineral character that is the hallmark of the finest Heathcote wines.
Heathcote’s continental climate — warm summers, cold winters, and the dramatic diurnal temperature variation that is the hallmark of inland Victorian wine regions — allows the Shiraz to ripen fully and develop the concentration and depth of flavour that define the regional style, while the cool nights preserve the natural acidity and structural elegance that allow the wines to age magnificently.
Our Range
Mallard Riesling — Heathcote — A textural dry Riesling of genuine complexity and site-driven character, sourced from two cool vineyard sites on Heathcote’s southern and south-eastern borders — Spring Plains and Tooborac. Extended ripening season, short skin contact pre-fermentation, and 20% barrel fermentation in new French oak puncheon. Lime and limestone on the nose with curd and green apple. Pink grapefruit and cumquat on the palate with beautiful natural acidity, generous texture, and a thrilling tart and pithy finish. Cellaring potential up to eight years.
White Duck — Heathcote — A textural aromatic white blend of Roussanne (37%), Marsanne (32%), Grenache Blanc (26%), and Viognier (5%), fermented and matured for six months in large 2,000L French oak foudre and puncheons on full yeast lees. Honeysuckle, acacia, citrus, sweet apple, and apricot on the nose with a waxy texture. Almond and spice on the palate — ripe, textural, and deeply satisfying. 92 Points — Jeni Port, Halliday’s Wine Companion, October 2025.
Red Duck GSM — Heathcote — A vibrant Grenache-Shiraz-Mataro blend of 56% Grenache, 37% Shiraz, and 7% Mataro, harvested and vinified separately before 16 months of maturation in seasoned French and American oak. Violets, blackberry, raspberry, baking spices, and anise on the nose. Blood plums, black cherries, and cured meat on the palate with refreshing natural acidity and supple earthy tannins. A Heathcote GSM of genuine Southern Rhône character. 93 Points — James Halliday’s Wine Companion.
Yellow Hammer Hill SMC — Heathcote — A brooding blend of Shiraz (79%), Malbec (12%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (9%), partly matured in concrete vats alongside French and American oak. Earth, cut meats, blood sausage, and intoxicating dark boysenberry on the nose. Bold yet silky, supple, and tightly wound on the palate with blue fruits — blueberry, plums, tart red cherry — and elements of herb, spice, and a sappy bitterness in the tannin. Cellar for up to 15 years. 93 Points — Mike Bennie, The Wine Front.
Ducks & Drakes Cabernet Sauvignon — Heathcote — 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the Northern vineyards at Colbinnabbin, north of Heathcote. Fully de-stemmed, fermented in open fermenters, hand plunged and pumped over, then basket pressed into French and American oak barriques, hogsheads, and puncheons (40% new). Vivid red with lifted aromas of black fruits and tobacco. Rich and full on the palate with blackberry liquéur, bay leaf, and olive tapenade. Structure builds over time with layers of Cabernet tannins. Cellar for up to 15 years.
Springflat Shiraz — Heathcote — Wild Duck Creek Estate’s original flagship wine, produced every vintage since 1991. A blend of four distinct estate-grown Heathcote vineyards, with a small amount of whole bunches in ferments for added texture, hand plunged, basket pressed, and matured in French and American oak hogsheads for up to 22 months (40% new). Brilliant purple-red with intense aromas of bright red fruits, chocolate, and strawberry creams. Dense and luxurious on the palate — reminiscent of fresh pastries from a French patisserie, combining creaminess and silky yet dense red fruits. Complexity abounds with bright natural acids and a lovely clean finish. Cellar for up to 15 years.
Alan’s Cabernets — Heathcote — A distinguished Bordeaux-inspired blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, sourced from a naturally low-yielding vineyard producing less than one kilogram of fruit per vine. Hand plunged and basket pressed, matured for 20 months in 100% new French oak hogsheads, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. Crushed blueberry, stone, bay leaf, dried clove, violet, and black bean on the nose. Blueberry, olive, boysenberry, graphite, and cinnamon stick on the palate with beautifully integrated new French oak. A wine of extraordinary concentration and structural elegance.
Grandpa Duck Cabernet Shiraz — Heathcote — A tribute to founder David Anderson, crafted from his two favourite varieties and sourced exclusively from the Rathjen Vineyard — selected for the most intensely flavoured and structured Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz parcels. Aged for 26 to 30 months in new French and American oak hogsheads. Deep, rich red with a complex and fragrant bouquet of choc-mint ice cream, blackcurrant, mulberry, anise, and cinnamon, accented by red cherry and subtle earthy notes of brick dust and paperbark. Succulent, soft, and velvety on the palate — opulent yet fresh, silky and unctuous in texture. 95 Points — Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, Drink 2024–2037.
Shiraz Reserve — Heathcote — The pinnacle of the Wild Duck Creek Estate range — an estate-grown Heathcote Shiraz of exceptional quality, produced with extraordinary attention to detail in the vineyard (hard cane pruning, shoot thinning, under-vine mulching, fruit thinning at veraison) and the winery (up to 50% whole bunches in ferment, basket pressed into 100% new French oak barriques for up to 27 months). Deep, inky purple-black. Blackcurrant jam, brambles, new leather, garrigue, mint, choc-mint biscuits, breathy clove, and cinnamon on the nose. A wall of thick, rumbling tannin with an impossibly sweet and spicy finish. A technicolour wine of the highest order. 96 Points — Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, Drink 2024–2035.
How to Enjoy Wild Duck Creek Estate Wines
The Mallard Riesling and White Duck are best served well chilled at 8–10°C — outstanding with fresh seafood, Asian cuisine, and aromatic dishes. The Red Duck GSM, Yellow Hammer Hill SMC, and Ducks & Drakes Cabernet are best at 16–18°C with grilled lamb, beef, and aged cheeses. The Springflat Shiraz, Alan’s Cabernets, Grandpa Duck, and Shiraz Reserve are best at 16–18°C and reward decanting for 30–60 minutes — the Shiraz Reserve and Alan’s Cabernets in particular benefit from extended decanting of 60 minutes or more. All have the structure and concentration to develop magnificently in the cellar for a decade or more.
