Tasting Notes

Appearance

Bright golden amber with excellent clarity and viscosity, displaying attractive legs that hint at the whiskey's rich, oily texture and quality maturation.

Aroma

The nose opens with vibrant flashes of crisp apple, complemented by hints of vanilla and golden honey over a distinctive pot still base. This aromatic foundation showcases the traditional copper pot distillation character that defines Irish whiskey craftsmanship.

Palate

Gently spiced with a delightful burst of warming ginger and rich butterscotch, the palate reveals layers of complexity. Background notes of toasted oak add depth and structure, whilst the pot still character provides a creamy, full-bodied mouthfeel. The finish is long and elegant, concluding with subtle notes of milk chocolate and roasted almonds that linger beautifully.

Pairs With

Writer's Tears Copper Pot Irish Whiskey pairs magnificently with dark chocolate desserts, crème brûlée, or apple tart with vanilla ice cream. It's equally superb alongside mature Irish cheddar, smoked salmon on brown bread, or enjoyed neat as a contemplative after-dinner dram that rewards slow sipping and appreciation.

Production Notes

Writer's Tears Copper Pot Irish Whiskey is triple distilled and non-peated, then matured and aged in American oak bourbon casks to develop its distinctive character. This exceptional blend marries spiced pure pot still whiskey with floral single malt—a throwback to the last century's traditional Irish whiskey-making methods. The result is an altogether unusual Irish whiskey that has earned a Gold Medal at the International Spirits Challenge in London and achieved one of the highest ratings in Jim Murray's iconic "Whiskey Bible". Murray himself notes: "Altogether a very unusual Irish Whiskey, a throwback to the last century where spiced Pure Pot Still whiskey was married with Floral Single Malt." The expression has also been featured in Ian Buxton's prestigious publication "101 Whiskeys to Try Before You Die", cementing its status amongst the world's finest spirits.

Distillery Info

19th and early 20th century Ireland was a golden era both for Irish whiskey and, perhaps coincidentally, for great Irish novelists, poets, and playwrights. Ireland was the leading whiskey-producing nation in the world and the birthplace of literary giants including George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, W.B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, and Bram Stoker, to name but a few. Many of these great writers would take refuge in their local public house, drawing inspiration from daily observations of life whilst enjoying the comfort of their favourite dram. At this time, one whiskey blend was held high above all others—known as the 'champagne of Irish whiskey', it was a master blend of pot still and malt whiskeys, both distilled in copper pots. Enjoyed by many great Irish writers of the day for its full-bodied, flavoursome taste and creamy texture, it was said that they enjoyed it so much that when they cried, their tears were of whiskey.
