Tar & Roses Heathcote Sangiovese 2024 is a bright, elegant, and beautifully balanced expression of one of Italy’s great varieties grown in one of Victoria’s most celebrated red wine regions. Sangiovese — a thin-skinned variety known for its herbal and spice notes, high tannins, and natural acidity — finds an ideal home in Heathcote’s well-drained soils and abundant sunlight, producing a wine of genuine character and finesse. Bright light ruby red in colour, with attractive lifted terracotta clay characters, rose water, and red cherries on the nose, and hints of clove and cinnamon spice; substantial fine-grained tannins supporting sweet cherry fruit flavours on a well-balanced, medium-bodied palate. Machine harvested, fermented in static fermenters with twice-daily pump overs, and matured in older used barriques. Heathcote Sangiovese at its most expressive and approachable.

Winemaking Notes

Machine harvested into 2.5 tonne steel bins and transported directly to the winery for immediate processing. Crushed to static fermenters and pumped over twice daily for approximately 20 minutes each time, with temperature and acid levels monitored constantly and adjusted when necessary. After completing fermentation, the wine was pressed to tank using an air bag press, racked off gross lees to barrel, and matured in mainly older used barriques — checked and topped each month to ensure optimal development and freshness.
