Tasting Notes
Impenetrably dark with only 1–2mm of rim. On the nose: black pudding, marrow, pan scrapings, bay leaf, black cherry, dark chocolate and Chinotto — with Grange's trademark volatile acidity and 100% new American oak conceded, old school and proudly so.
On the palate: immediately saturated, slurpy and sumptuous. Rich and lush with volume, density, energy and drive. Tightly woven tannins fan outward in a veritable lava flow — buffed, resolved and polished. Lingers long. Reminiscent of the 1998.
Vintage Conditions
The 2022 vintage was defined by a cool and measured growing season across South Australia. Significant hail events in late October reduced yields in the Barossa Valley. A mild summer with few extreme heat events followed, with low yields and extended ripening delivering small berries, firm tannin structure and controlled power across Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra.
Winemaking
97% Shiraz, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra. Matured 18 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Alc/Vol: 14.5% | Acidity: 6.9 g/L | pH: 3.70. Cork closure.
