Reviews
95 Points - Mike Bennie, Wine Companion (Published 03 February 2026)
"Straight-up delicious. The most moreish of Clare rieslings, with emphatic regional character in lime, bath salts, prickly minerality, dashes of almond cream and cinnamon spice. Intense and yet very refreshing. This has a distinct, savoury appeal and suggestions of winemaking nous to build that savoury character. Balanced, lengthy, refreshing and just so darn good. Distinctly Euro-leaning in its vibe, but wholly of the legacy of Mitchell's distinct approach to winemaking. A bloody ripper."

Winemaking Notes
Mitchell Watervale Riesling is crafted in the same traditional, low-intervention style that has been used consistently for the past 45 years. The crop is hand-picked and treated carefully in the winery, where only the highest quality free-run juice is used. The wine undergoes a slow, gentle fermentation with indigenous vineyard yeast, allowing the natural character of the fruit to shine through. An extended period on fine lees results in a textural and balanced wine, characterised by its refreshing acid, finesse and approachable elegance. Riesling can lay claim to being the world's most noble grape, offering great intensity of flavour and telling the story of its origins without the need for intervention.
Vintage Conditions
The 2025 vintage in Watervale experienced a wet and cold winter followed by an extremely mild summer, with sunny days few and far between. This resulted in a very slow ripening period, but with this came exceptional flavour development and acid retention. Mitchell's Riesling vineyards had great soil moisture heading into the growing season with big, full canopies—the vines were never stressed, and the fruit picked was outstanding. These conditions produced a wine that packs a punch with zingy lemon and lime, touched by kaffir lime and bay leaf, with a wild edge of flinty struck match and salty wet sand. It's summer in a glass with a hint of stormy intrigue, showcasing the exceptional quality that defines this benchmark Watervale Riesling.
