Tasting Notes

Appearance

Deep, impenetrable crimson with vibrant purple hues, showcasing the wine's youth and concentration from the elevated D-Block vineyard.

Aroma

The nose opens with layers of ripe mulberry and blackberry, complemented by aromatic cedar and vanilla bean from 22 months in French oak. Subtle spice notes emerge, revealing the wine's complexity and careful barrel selection.

Palate

Rich and robust on the palate, this Shiraz displays the hallmark soft, grippy tannins that define The Beast. The fine-grained tannin structure provides excellent framework whilst remaining approachable, balanced by enticing complexity and well-integrated oak. Flavours of dark berries, cedar and vanilla bean persist through the long, satisfying finish. The 2023 vintage's gradual ripening conditions have delivered exceptional natural acidity, ensuring freshness and longevity.

Sourced from a single block high on the estate peak where shallow red clay loam overlies shattered limestone, the vines benefit from reduced natural vigour and long, even sunlight exposure on the elevated eastern aspect. The 2023 vintage experienced ideal conditions—delayed ripening, gradual flavour accumulation and great natural acidity—resulting in a wine of remarkable balance and intensity.

Pairs With

The Beast Shiraz 2023 pairs beautifully with slow-cooked lamb shoulder, char-grilled ribeye steak, braised beef short ribs or mature hard cheeses such as aged cheddar or Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Cellaring potential: Drink now to 2035+

Vintage Conditions

The 2023 vintage at Hentley Farm's Seppeltsfield Vineyard was characterised by ideal growing conditions that delivered exceptional fruit quality. Winter brought consistent rainfall followed by above-average spring precipitation, whilst mild spring and early summer temperatures ensured steady canopy development without extreme heat stress. Summer rainfall remained below average with light autumn precipitation, creating perfect ripening conditions. The combination of mild to average daytime temperatures and cool nights resulted in delayed ripening, allowing gradual and extended flavour accumulation whilst preserving great natural acidity. These conditions proved ideal for the elevated D-Block vineyard, where shallow red clay loam overlying shattered limestone and north-south oriented rows with eastern aspect provided long, even sunlight exposure, reducing natural vine vigour and intensifying fruit concentration.

Winemaking Notes

The Beast Shiraz 2023 was crafted using traditional Barossa winemaking techniques to showcase the exceptional fruit from the Seppeltsfield Vineyard. Harvested between 23rd March and 14th April 2023, the grapes were de-stemmed and fermented for 10-12 days on skins in open fermenters with pump-overs to extract optimal colour, flavour and tannin. Following basket pressing, the wine underwent natural malolactic fermentation before being matured for 22 months in French oak barrels—60% new and 40% seasoned—to develop complexity whilst maintaining fruit purity. This careful oak regime has imparted subtle cedar and vanilla bean notes that complement rather than dominate the intense mulberry and blackberry fruit, resulting in a wine with fine-grained tannins, well-structured palate and integrated oak that will continue to evolve gracefully through to 2035 and beyond.
