Tasting Notes

Appearance

This distinguished Bas-Armagnac presents a beautiful copper colour with warm golden hues and brilliant clarity, displaying the exceptional depth and concentration characteristic of over forty years of patient ageing in oak barrels at the Delord family distillery in Lannepax — the ancestral home of one of Armagnac’s most celebrated and visionary producers.

Aroma

The nose is rich and immediately captivating, with opening aromas of sweet leather, roast almonds and hazelnut alongside toffee apple and an enticing array of spices — cinnamon, clove and vanilla — creating a sophisticated and deeply layered aromatic profile. The bouquet reflects more than four decades of careful oak maturation, with each element in perfect harmony — a testament to the extraordinary patience and expertise of the Delord family and their prized Sier Armagnac alambics that produce less than 30 litres of eau-de-vie per hour.

Palate

Robust and spicy on the palate, with baked apple and raisin flavours followed by a warming wave of cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. The spirit tingle is warming and almost prickly, with a drying, complex aftertaste of orange zest, vanilla, nutmeg and old leather that lingers beautifully. The hallmark Delord style — very rounded, soft and easy to drink — is evident throughout, with the 1985 vintage delivering extraordinary depth and character.

Pairs With

This exceptional Bas-Armagnac is a natural companion to dark chocolate, toffee pudding, baked apple tart, raisin cake, aged cheeses, or enjoyed as a contemplative digestif after a very special meal, making it the ultimate gift for those born in 1985 and a truly distinguished addition to any serious spirits collection.

Production Notes

Delord Bas Armagnac 1985 700mL is produced at the family distillery in Lannepax, Bas-Armagnac, using Colombard, Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche grape varieties. Distillation — the most essential and fascinating stage in Armagnac production — takes place from the beginning of November through to the end of December, using the family’s treasured old Sier Armagnac alambics that produce less than 30 litres of eau-de-vie per hour. The eau-de-vie is then aged in one of more than 700 oak barrels in Delord’s cellars, which protect and age Armagnac dating from the 20th century to the present day. Delord’s vintage Armagnac range is one of the most complete in existence, with vintages from 1900 to 2006 — only 33 vintage years unavailable. Bottles indicate a bottling date, as it is only age in wood that truly matters.

History

The 1985 vintage Armagnac from Delord represents a rare and exceptional piece of French spirits heritage. Bas-Armagnac, situated in the Gascony region of south-west France, is the most prestigious of the three Armagnac appellations, renowned for producing eau-de-vie of exceptional finesse, complexity and aromatic depth. The region’s sandy soils — known as sables fauves — are ideally suited to the Colombard, Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche grape varieties that form the foundation of Delord’s Armagnac. Thanks to Delord’s extraordinary vision in storing exceptional Armagnacs for such extended periods, the 1985 vintage has had over forty years to develop its remarkable complexity of sweet leather, roast almond, hazelnut, toffee apple, cinnamon, clove, vanilla, baked apple, raisin, orange zest and nutmeg — a living testament to the patience, expertise and heritage of the Delord family and the unique terroir of Bas-Armagnac.
