The number one Shiraz out of 111 entries. The highest-rated Australian trophy winner of the competition. From McLaren Vale, a wine of great balance and depth with lifted spicy cloves, hints of musky redskin, and vanilla bean spice notes that captures the elegance, powerful complexity, and unique essence of this renowned South Australian region.

Appearance

Deep crimson with vibrant ruby hues — showcasing the wine's youthful character and McLaren Vale provenance with the depth and intensity that 97-point fruit concentration delivers.

Aroma

Perfumed and lifted — opening with notes of blueberry and plum followed by delicate whispers of potpourri. Surprisingly youthful and fresh, with lifted spicy cloves and vanilla bean spice notes adding aromatic complexity. A nose of genuine distinction and the kind of expressive, multi-layered character that earns international trophies.

Palate

Medium-bodied with tangy acidity that imparts lively energy — fine-grained yet firm tannins creating a captivating, chewy texture that coats the mouth. Flavours of fresh red cherry, plum, and sultanas mingle with mint and eucalyptus, whilst dry herbs and the intriguing spice of Chinese five spices contribute to a multi-dimensional experience. Great depth, length, and structure define the finish. The world's best Shiraz, and every sip confirms it.

Pairs With

Grilled lamb cutlets, slow-cooked beef brisket, or mature cheddar cheese — the firm tannins and vibrant acidity also complement barbecued sausages, mushroom risotto, or char-grilled vegetables with herbs. A well-balanced McLaren Vale Shiraz of this calibre is a genuinely versatile partner at the table.

Winemaking Notes

Beresford Classic Shiraz 2023 is crafted with meticulous attention to detail to showcase the quality of McLaren Vale fruit. Grapes are picked based on both colour and flavour development, then gently crushed and fermented for 7–10 days at approximately 20°C. Small open-top fermenters are employed with hand pumping over and rack and return techniques to ensure optimum extraction of tannins and colour. Following fermentation, the wine is softly pressed into a combination of French and American oak where it undergoes natural malolactic fermentation. The winemaking philosophy emphasises gentle handling and natural processes, with no animal products used for fining or filtration — making this wine vegan friendly.

Vintage Conditions

The 2023 vintage in McLaren Vale provided excellent growing conditions for Shiraz production. Moderate temperatures and well-timed rainfall during the growing period ensured healthy vine development and optimal canopy management. Warm, sunny days during the ripening phase allowed the Shiraz grapes to develop concentrated flavours and rich colour, whilst cool nights preserved natural acidity and aromatic intensity. Harvest conditions were favourable, with stable weather enabling the winemaking team to pick at peak ripeness when both colour and flavour development were optimal — the ideal vintage foundation for a wine that would go on to be named the world’s best Shiraz.
