Tasting Notes

Appearance

Deep amber with rich mahogany hues, displaying excellent clarity and viscosity. The rum forms thick, slow-moving legs on the glass, testament to its 15 years of maturation in oak casks and full-bodied character.

Aroma

The nose reveals a gorgeous funk with captivating aromas of toasted almond and hazelnut, complemented by bright orange peel and creamy vanilla. Herbal notes of fresh sage, tarragon and bay leaf emerge alongside hints of roasted coffee, honeycomb and rich molasses. This complex aromatic profile showcases the authentic Jamaican rum character that requires no added flavours or adjuncts, speaking eloquently for itself.

Palate

Rich and full-bodied, the palate delivers burnt sugar and coffee reminiscent of coffee-flavoured crème brûlée, balanced by orange zest and sweet baking spices. Whilst slightly less herbaceous than the nose, fresh herbal qualities persist on the back palate alongside earthy funk that defines premium Jamaican rum. The finish is clean, balanced and spicy with just a touch of warmth. Awarded 94 points by Amanda Schuster of Distiller, this exceptional rum is equally magnificent enjoyed neat or on the rocks, offering a sensory experience so profound you'll regret having only five senses.

Pairs With

This versatile aged rum pairs beautifully with dark chocolate desserts, coffee-based sweets such as tiramisu or espresso panna cotta, rich fruit cakes and aged cheeses including mature cheddar or Manchego. It's also exceptional alongside premium cigars or as a contemplative after-dinner digestif.

Distillery Info

Appleton Estate 15 YO Black River Casks represents the pinnacle of Jamaican rum craftsmanship, meticulously aged for a minimum of 15 years in the unique microclimate of the Nassau Valley. This exceptional expression is created using a blend of pot still and column still rums, distilled from molasses fermented with natural spring water filtered through the valley's rare karst limestone formations. The rum undergoes maturation in hand-selected American oak barrels that previously held bourbon, allowing the spirit to develop its characteristic deep amber colour and complex flavour profile. What distinguishes this release is the final maturation period in Black River Casks, specially selected barrels that impart additional layers of complexity, enhancing the toasted almond, hazelnut and coffee notes whilst maintaining the authentic Jamaican funk that defines premium estate rums. The master blenders at Appleton Estate carefully monitor each barrel throughout the ageing process, selecting only those that demonstrate exceptional character and balance for this prestigious 15-year-old expression.

The Black River Casks expression benefits from over 270 years of rum-making heritage at Appleton Estate, where consistent tropical conditions in the Nassau Valley create an ideal environment for year-round production and accelerated maturation. The estate's unique karst landscape, characterised by cone-like limestone hills, caves and underground water sources, provides naturally filtered spring water that contributes essential mineral qualities to the fermentation process. Jamaica's warm, humid climate, with temperatures averaging 27°C and abundant rainfall throughout the year, creates optimal conditions for sugar cane cultivation on the estate's 11,000 acres whilst simultaneously accelerating the angel's share during barrel ageing, concentrating flavours and developing the rum's rich, full-bodied character. The 15 years of maturation represent approximately 45-50 years of ageing in cooler climates, resulting in exceptional depth and complexity that earned this expression 94 points from Distiller, cementing its status as one of Jamaica's finest aged rums.
