About Hoddles Creek Estate
Hoddles Creek Estate was established in 1997 when the D'Anna family decided to establish a vineyard on the property that has been in the family since 1960. The vineyard sits astride Gembrook Road and adjacent to Hoddles Creek, in one of the Yarra Valley's most distinguished cool-climate sites. Its steeply sloping blocks prohibit mechanical harvesting, with both vineyards being hand pruned and harvestedβa labour-intensive approach that ensures meticulous attention to quality at every stage. All their wines, which are single vineyard, estate grown, are made in their 300-tonne winery, constructed for the 2003 vintage. The split-level winery has a barrel store located three metres underground, providing ideal temperature and humidity conditions for barrel maturation.
The Yarra Valley Wine Region
The Yarra Valley stands as one of Australia's most prestigious cool-climate wine regions, located approximately 50 kilometres northeast of Melbourne in Victoria. Established in the 1830s, the Yarra Valley is one of Australia's oldest wine regions, with a rich viticultural heritage that has been revitalised since the 1960s. The region's diverse landscape encompasses rolling hills, elevated sites, and varied aspects, creating a patchwork of distinct mesoclimates ideal for premium wine production. The valley's proximity to Port Phillip Bay moderates temperatures, whilst elevation variations from 50 to 400 metres above sea level provide cooler sites particularly suited to Burgundian varieties. The Yarra Valley has earned international recognition for producing elegant, refined wines that rival the world's finest cool-climate regions.
Yarra Valley Terroir & Climate
Hoddles Creek Estate benefits from the Yarra Valley's exceptional cool-climate conditions, which prove ideal for slow, even ripening of premium grape varieties. The region experiences a temperate climate with significant diurnal temperature variationβwarm days promote flavour development and physiological ripeness, whilst cool nights preserve natural acidity and aromatic complexity. This extended ripening period allows grapes to achieve full phenolic maturity with balanced sugar levels and complex flavour profiles. The Yarra Valley receives moderate rainfall, primarily during winter and spring, with drier conditions during the critical ripening and harvest months reducing disease pressure. The region's ancient soils, predominantly grey-brown loams over clay subsoils with areas of volcanic origin, provide excellent drainage whilst retaining sufficient moisture to sustain the vines. The steeply sloping terrain at Hoddles Creek Estate ensures optimal drainage and sun exposure, creating ideal conditions for producing wines of elegance, structure, and longevity.
Hoddles Creek Estate Varieties & Vineyard
Hoddles Creek Estate is planted with a carefully selected range of varieties ideally suited to the Yarra Valley's cool-climate conditions. The estate comprises 10 hectares of Pinot Noir across five different clones, allowing the winemaking team to craft wines with remarkable complexity and depth by blending the distinctive characteristics of each clone. Six hectares of Chardonnay produce elegant wines with citrus, stone fruit, and subtle mineral qualities. The estate also includes 1.5 hectares of Pinot Gris, offering aromatic white wines with pear and spice notes, alongside one hectare each of Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. This diverse planting reflects the D'Anna family's commitment to exploring the full potential of their unique site, with each variety carefully matched to the most suitable blocks based on aspect, elevation, and soil composition.
Single Vineyard Philosophy & Winemaking
Hoddles Creek Estate's dedication to single vineyard, estate-grown wines ensures complete control from vine to bottle, allowing the D'Anna family to craft wines that authentically express their specific site. By sourcing fruit exclusively from their own vineyards, they maintain intimate knowledge of every block and how each vintage's conditions influence the fruit. The hand pruning and hand harvesting approach, necessitated by the steep slopes but embraced as a quality measure, ensures that only the finest fruit enters the winery. Winemaker Franco D'Anna combines traditional techniques with modern precision, allowing the vineyard's inherent qualities to shine through in wines of elegance, purity, and distinctive Yarra Valley character. The underground barrel store provides optimal conditions for maturation, with stable temperatures and humidity encouraging slow, gentle development of complexity.

The D'Anna Family Legacy
The D'Anna family's connection to their Hoddles Creek property spans over six decades, with the land having been in the family since 1960. This deep-rooted relationship with the site informs every decision, from vineyard management through to final blending. The family's commitment to quality over quantity, reflected in their hand-tended vineyards and single vineyard approach, has established Hoddles Creek Estate as a benchmark producer in the Yarra Valley. Their wines consistently demonstrate the elegance, finesse, and complexity that define premium cool-climate Australian wine, earning critical acclaim and a loyal following amongst wine enthusiasts who appreciate terroir-driven expressions.
As independent liquor specialists, we're proud to offer great prices on Hoddles Creek Estate's exceptional range of single vineyard Yarra Valley wines, bringing the D'Anna family's dedication to quality and their distinctive cool-climate expressions directly to Australian wine lovers.
