The Poggiotondo Organic Chianti Superiore (DOCG) 2017 vintage is brooding garnet red, with intense complex aromas of dark berry fruits, green leafy herbs and a dark chariness. The mouthfeel is consistent with the complexity of the aromas, and the dark berry fruits are quickly surrounded by savoury herbs and spices with hints of tar, complimented with fine juicy tannins which fill the mouth and a long dry mineral finish.

Winery & Vintage Info

Situated in the heart of Tuscany, between Florence and Pisa, Poggiotondo’s wines are a pure expression of the Chianti region.

Alberto and Alessandra Antonini, following the principles of organic agricultures, grow their vineyards in a natural and balanced environment. Poggiotondo is immersed in an ancient farming landscape with biodiversity context: vineyards, olive trees, figs tree, old fruit plants, very ancient oak trees, cypress, bushes of raspberries and blackberries and exceptional natural beauty.

The soil has a marine origin as can be seen from the presence of limestone fossils ( sea shells) and its composition varies from a more sandy to a more silty clayed limestone. Its origin and the presence of limestone is important for the wine quality because it talks to its energy, vitality and tension that are defining character of their wines.

The Sangiovese fruit for the Poggiotondo Chianti Superiore 2017 vintage enter oak and concrete fermenters using the gravity flow system. Fermentation takes place using native yeasts. The wine goes through an extended maceration of 10 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place naturally. The Riserva is aged for approximately 20 months in 54 HL un-toasted oak cask.
