Wynns Black Label Cabernet Shiraz 2024 is a landmark release — the first time Wynns have released a classic Australian blend of Cabernet and Shiraz within their famed Black Label range, and a wine that immediately justifies the decision. From the historic McBain Road vineyards in northern Coonawarra, crafted by Winemaker Sue Hodder, this is a wine of purity, balance, and composure: Cabernet Sauvignon providing the framework with fine structure, cool-climate definition, and line; Shiraz contributing plush, generous fruit that fills the mid-palate without ever overwhelming it. Lifted aromas of blackcurrant, mulberry, red cherry, mint, and graphite; a medium-bodied palate of cassis, blackberry, dark plum, cocoa, anise, and subtle pepper; bright natural acidity and a clean, extended finish. A first release that will be remembered.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Deep, vibrant ruby — the rich, inviting colour of a Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz from the historic McBain Road vineyards, with the clarity and definition that cool-climate northern Coonawarra and the Black Label philosophy consistently deliver.

Aroma

Lifted aromas of blackcurrant, mulberry, and red cherry, layered with subtle blueberry and plum from the Shiraz component. Classic Coonawarra notes of fresh mint, soft dried herbs, and graphite sit beneath the fruit, supported by understated French oak adding hints of cedar, cocoa, and gentle spice.

Palate

Medium-bodied, supple, and beautifully balanced — Cabernet brings fine, chalky tannins, cassis purity, and a long, graceful line, while Shiraz contributes mid-palate juiciness and warm spice. Flavours of blackberry, redcurrant, and dark plum unfold alongside touches of cocoa, anise, and subtle pepper. The acidity is bright and natural, giving freshness, precision, and a clean, extended finish.

Pairs With

A natural companion for slow-roasted lamb, grilled beef, duck confit, aged hard cheeses, and the finest Coonawarra table — Wynns Black Label Cabernet Shiraz is equally rewarding now and will develop extraordinary complexity with cellaring. Drink now to 2045+. 13.4% ABV. Screwcap.

Reviews

Tony Love | Wine Pilot — 96 Points | May 2026

“Surprising. This is the first time Wynns have released a classic Australian blend of Cabernet and Shiraz within their famed Black Label range. In the best of its style, cabernet leads with dark fruit, mint and graphite. Shiraz brings juicy red berry and pepper — fresh, bright, and lifted on the finish. You just want to drink it now, though it will be worth a decent cellaring as well.”

Ray Jordan | Wine Pilot — 96 Points | April 2026

“This is the first release of this wine, which comes from the old McBain Road vineyards. It’s medium-bodied and generous. Balanced, poised, and seamlessly integrated. Drink now for sure, but holding it in the cellar for at least 10 or 12 years would be worth the wait.”

Huon Hooke | The Real Review — 95 Points | May 2026

“The structure is more cabernet than shiraz with firmness, tension, line and length. A splendid wine which has a big future.”
