Syrahmi Mourvèdre 2020 from Heathcote showcases a deep colour and complex aromas of clove oil, gentian violet, and balsamic herbs, hinting at whole-bunch fermentation. This medium-full bodied wine delivers intense flavours balanced by sinuous tannins and a refreshing acidity on the finish. Its unique profile offers an intriguing tasting experience for those seeking novel and sophisticated expressions in Mourvèdre.

Syrahmi Mourvèdre 2020 from Heathcote defies the typical boldness of Mourvèdre by employing gentle winemaking techniques without pumping or plunging to avoid over-extraction. Whole-bunch fermentation softens the tannins, creating a more savoury and delicate style. This nuanced wine pairs exceptionally well with cured meats, pâtés, and terrines, as well as slow-cooked dishes like veal ragu infused with rosemary and thyme, making it a versatile choice for refined food pairings.

Winery & Vintage Info

The 2020 vintage is the first time Syrahmi was working with the fruit sourced from the 25-year-old Willoughby Bridge vineyard located 55km north of Heathcote. Making this wine is all about laissez faire winemaking. Syrahmi wanted to capture the purity of Mourvèdre fruit without the dense, rich structure that it is famous for.

The winter of 2019 was dry and cold with very little if any rain resulting in very dry soils. Spring and Summer was not much better. The result was exceptionally low yields, culminating in dark, concentrated fruit but remarkable quality with all things considered.

50% whole bunch, wild yeast fermentation and malolactic fermentation. Open fermenter, no pumping; gentle plunge every 2nd day, 28 days on skins before pressing. Aged in older 500L Puncheons 100% French for 22 months, then a further 1 year in bottle before release. No fining or filtration.
