Peter Lehmann Masters Wigan Riesling 2018 is one of Australia’s most celebrated aged Rieslings — awarded Platinum (97 Points) at the 2023 Decanter World Wine Awards and Gold at the 2026 China Wine & Spirits Awards, alongside five gold medals at Australian wine shows in its vintage year. Released with five years of bottle age as is the tradition of the Masters range, the Wigan Riesling is named in honour of Andrew Wigan — Chief Winemaker at Peter Lehmann from 1980 to 2014, and the man whose passion for white wines transformed the winery’s reputation. Fresh, lively, and developing beautifully, this is a Riesling with many years of evolution still ahead.

Appearance

Pale straw with a delicate green tinge — bright and luminous, with the clarity of a wine made from early-picked, pristine Eden Valley fruit.

Aroma

Freshly picked limes lead the bouquet with just a touch of toast in the background — the hallmark of a Riesling beginning to develop its secondary complexity. Fresh, lively, and inviting, with the purity that defines great Eden Valley fruit.

Palate

Great fruit purity with a refreshingly crisp, dry finish. An abundance of natural acidity that is long, austere, and pure — this is a Wigan developing gently, with a beautiful balance of primary fruit and the added complexity of honey and savoury notes that come with bottle age. The structure strongly suggests many more years of graceful evolution ahead.

Pairs With

Freshly shucked oysters, grilled barramundi, Thai green curry, soft-rind cheeses, and Asian-inspired seafood dishes. A wine of remarkable versatility at the table.

Production Notes

Early picking is the defining winemaking decision behind the Wigan Riesling — harvesting before full physiological ripeness to preserve the natural acidity, delicate aromatics, and fruit purity that allow the wine to age with such grace and longevity. The 2018 vintage was released with five years of bottle age in keeping with the Masters range philosophy, and will continue to develop complexity and depth for many years to come.

Producer History

The Masters range at Peter Lehmann Wines honours the people and events that have shaped the winery’s story since its founding in 1979. Each wine is named after someone who played an intrinsic role in that story — and few have played a greater role than Andrew Wigan. Mentored by Peter Lehmann himself, Andrew joined the winery at its founding and served as Chief Winemaker from 1980 to 2014. His passion for white wines complemented Peter Lehmann’s celebrated reputation for Barossa Shiraz, and his refinement of the whites was, by any measure, revolutionary. In 2003, the winery’s revered Reserve Riesling was renamed the Wigan Riesling in his honour — a fitting tribute to a winemaker whose contribution to the Peter Lehmann story is woven into every bottle.
