Opal Nera is the original black Sambuca — created by the Francoli Distillery in Piedmont, Northern Italy in 1989, and now the number one selling Sambuca in the world across more than 30 countries. Made from all-natural ingredients including star anise, green anise, elderberries, Sicilian lemons, and water drawn from a local alpine water source originally created by Leonardo da Vinci, Opal Nera gets its distinctive liquorice purple-black colour from the skins of the elderberry plant’s black berries — a plant that grows wild throughout Italy. Strong on anise and lemon, decadent and full on the palate, with rounded liquorice and earthy berry flavours, and a finish that moves from sharp sugar snap to a lingering, subtle spice.

Appearance

Deep purple-black — the unmistakable colour of Opal Nera, derived entirely from the skins of elderberries grown wild throughout Italy. An infusion of elderberries, cloves, cinnamon, and black cumin is the secret to this extraordinary hue.

Aroma

Strong and inviting — star anise and green anise lead a fresh and intriguing bouquet, with Sicilian lemon peel adding brightness and the elderberry infusion contributing an earthy, berry depth that is entirely Opal Nera’s own.

Palate

Decadent and full — rounded liquorice and earthy berry flavours deliver a palate of genuine richness and balance, with a very smooth finish that moves from a sharp sugar snap to a lingering, subtle spice. Strong on anise and lemon, and beautifully balanced throughout.

Serving Suggestions

Served neat at room temperature, chilled over ice, or flamed in the traditional Italian style. Also outstanding in cocktails — a Black Sambuca Sour, a Black Russian variation, or simply lengthened with soda and a twist of lemon for a long, refreshing serve.

Production Notes

Opal Nera is made from all-natural ingredients — star anise, green anise, the peel of Italian lemons, and water drawn from a local alpine water source originally created by Leonardo da Vinci. An infusion of elderberries, cloves, cinnamon, and black cumin gives Opal Nera its deep purple hue and distinctive earthy complexity. The name “sambuca” originates from the Latin name of the elder tree — Sambucus nigra — which grows in abundance throughout Northern Italy.

Producer History

The Francoli Distillery was founded in Piedmont, Northern Italy in 1951 by Luigi Francoli — a family distillery with a rich history of grappa production spanning five generations. Opal Nera, the original black Sambuca, was created by the Francoli Distillery in 1989, and since its launch its success has spread to over 30 countries around the world. In many markets, Opal Nera is not only the number one selling black Sambuca, but the number one Sambuca in the world — a remarkable achievement for a family distillery from Piedmont that has never compromised on natural ingredients or the integrity of its original recipe.
