When Kilbeggan Distillery closed in 1953, the townspeople refused to accept defeat or let it become a mere monument. The distillery held too much importance for them, and they were determined to keep its legacy alive despite any challenges.
Kilbeggan Distillery, the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in Ireland, was founded by Matthew MacManus in 1757. The Locke family ran it from 1843 until it closed in 1957 due to outdated machinery, high taxes, transport costs, economic depression, and prohibition in the U.S. Cooley Distillery acquired it in 1988 and resumed whiskey production in 2007. Now part of the Kilbeggan Distilling Company and Beam Suntory since 2012, the distillery continues to produce malt whiskey today.
Kilbeggan is a traditional Irish Whiskey double distilled the old way, to preserve more flavour whilst retaining the classic Irish smoothness.
