Montalto — Mornington Peninsula's Most Celebrated Cool-Climate Estate

Montalto is one of the Mornington Peninsula's most admired and awarded wineries — a family estate of genuine distinction whose wines have consistently demonstrated the extraordinary potential of Victoria's most exciting cool-climate wine region. With a philosophy built on sustainable farming, meticulous viticulture, and minimal intervention winemaking, Montalto produces wines of remarkable elegance, complexity, and regional authenticity that have earned the respect of critics and collectors across Australia and beyond.

History & Heritage

Montalto was established by John Mitchell and his family on the Red Hill subregion of the Mornington Peninsula — one of the coolest and most prestigious sites on the Peninsula, where the combination of altitude, maritime influence, and ancient soils creates ideal conditions for producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of exceptional finesse. The estate takes its name from the Italian for ‘hill’ — a nod to the rolling, elevated landscape of Red Hill that defines the character of the wines produced there.

From its earliest vintages, Montalto distinguished itself through a commitment to quality that extended from the vineyard to the cellar door. The estate's restaurant, gardens, and cellar door have become one of the Mornington Peninsula's most celebrated destinations, but it is the wines that remain the heart of everything Montalto does — wines that express the unique character of their sub-regional origins with clarity, precision, and genuine depth.

Montalto's commitment to sustainable and organic farming practices is central to its identity. The estate prioritises the health of its soils and vines through organic methods, water conservation, and biodiversity initiatives that ensure the long-term vitality of the land. This environmental stewardship is not merely a philosophy — it is reflected directly in the purity, freshness, and vitality of every wine the estate produces.

The Region: Mornington Peninsula, Victoria

The Mornington Peninsula is one of Australia's most distinctive and exciting cool-climate wine regions — a narrow strip of land south of Melbourne, bounded by Port Phillip Bay to the west and Western Port Bay to the east, that benefits from one of the most consistently cool and maritime-influenced growing climates in the country. The Peninsula's proximity to two large bodies of water moderates temperatures throughout the growing season, preventing the extremes of heat that affect many mainland Australian wine regions and creating ideal conditions for producing wines of natural acidity, aromatic complexity, and structural elegance.

The Mornington Peninsula's soils are diverse and ancient — ranging from the red volcanic soils of Red Hill and Merricks to the sandy loams and clay subsoils of the Tuerong subregion at the northern end of the Peninsula. This diversity of soil types, combined with the Peninsula's varied topography of hills, valleys, and coastal exposures, creates a mosaic of distinct sub-regional characters that Montalto captures and celebrates across its range.

Red Hill is the coolest and most elevated subregion of the Mornington Peninsula, sitting at 100–200 metres above sea level on ancient red volcanic soils. The combination of altitude, cool temperatures, and well-drained volcanic soils produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of exceptional finesse, mineral precision, and longevity. Red Hill is widely regarded as the Mornington Peninsula's most prestigious subregion for premium cool-climate varieties.

Merricks is a coastal subregion on the western side of the Peninsula, benefiting from the moderating influence of Port Phillip Bay. Its red volcanic soils and cool maritime climate produce wines of generous fruit character and elegant structure.

Tuerong, at the northern end of the Peninsula, is a warmer and more sheltered subregion whose sandy loam soils produce wines of greater fruit generosity and approachability — a complementary counterpoint to the cooler, more structured character of Red Hill and Merricks fruit in Montalto's blends.

Grape Varieties & Winemaking

Pinot Noir is the variety that defines the Mornington Peninsula and the wine at the heart of the Montalto range. The Peninsula's cool maritime climate, diverse soils, and long, slow growing season produce Pinot Noir of extraordinary complexity — bright red and dark cherry fruit, characteristic spice and earthiness, silky tannins, and a structural elegance that allows the wines to age beautifully for five to ten years or more. Montalto's Pinot Noir is crafted with a combination of wild fermentation, cold maceration, carbonic maceration (for freshness and fruit complexity), and careful French oak maturation to produce wines of genuine depth and regional authenticity.

Chardonnay is the Peninsula's other great variety, and Montalto's Pennon Hill Chardonnay is a benchmark of the regional style. Hand-harvested fruit is whole-bunch pressed directly to French oak barriques and puncheons, where wild fermentation and natural malolactic fermentation develop complexity and texture. Nine months of lees ageing adds further richness and depth before blending and bottling.

Pinot Gris is one of the Mornington Peninsula's most exciting emerging varieties, and Montalto's Pennon Hill Pinot Gris is a beautifully crafted expression of the style. Sourced predominantly from the Tuerong subregion with a balance from the cooler Red Hill vineyard, the wine is made using a combination of stainless steel and old French oak fermentation to preserve freshness and varietal definition while adding complexity and texture.

How to Enjoy Montalto Wines

The Pennon Hill Chardonnay and Pinot Gris are best served at 10–12°C in a generous white wine glass — allow them 10–15 minutes to open and reveal their full aromatic complexity. The Pennon Hill Pinot Noir is best served at 16–18°C in a Burgundy-style glass; allow it to breathe for 20–30 minutes before serving. The Estate Pinot Noir rewards decanting for 30–60 minutes and will continue to develop and reward for five to ten years in the cellar. All four wines are outstanding with food — the Pinot Noirs in particular are among the most food-friendly wines in the Australian repertoire.
