History & Heritage
Maxwell Wines was established in 1979 by Mark Maxwell, whose vision for the winery was rooted in a deep respect for the McLaren Vale landscape and a desire to produce wines that captured its unique character with honesty and precision. The winery is located on the south-facing slope of a solid limestone hill in the heart of McLaren Vale — a site chosen for its exceptional natural advantages, including the excellent drainage provided by the limestone bedrock that creates an environment perfectly suited to producing Shiraz of the highest quality.
Over more than four decades, Maxwell Wines has remained a family operation, with the Maxwell family's hands-on approach to viticulture and winemaking ensuring that every wine in the range reflects the same passion and attention to detail that Mark Maxwell brought to the estate's first vintage. The winery's commitment to its vineyards — including some of the oldest and most distinguished vine plantings in McLaren Vale — is central to the character and quality of its wines.
The Region: McLaren Vale, South Australia
McLaren Vale is one of Australia's most celebrated and distinctive wine regions — a compact, diverse, and extraordinarily beautiful area located approximately 40 kilometres south of Adelaide on the Fleurieu Peninsula, bounded by the Mount Lofty Ranges to the east and the Gulf St Vincent to the west. The region's Mediterranean climate — warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters — is ideal for grape growing, and the moderating influence of afternoon sea breezes from the Gulf St Vincent prevents the extreme heat events that can affect less fortunate sites, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and evenly while retaining natural acidity and aromatic complexity.
McLaren Vale's soils are among the most diverse of any Australian wine region, encompassing ancient red-brown earths, sandy loams, clay subsoils, and the distinctive ironstone and limestone formations that are the geological signature of the area. The limestone that underlies much of the region — including the Maxwell estate — provides excellent drainage, forces vine roots deep into the subsoil in search of water and nutrients, and imparts a characteristic mineral quality to the wines grown above it. This combination of warm climate, diverse soils, and the moderating influence of the sea produces wines of remarkable richness, depth, and complexity — particularly Shiraz, which has found in McLaren Vale one of its greatest homes anywhere in the world.
McLaren Vale Shiraz is celebrated for its distinctive profile of dark fruit (blackberry, dark cherry, plum), chocolate, and earth, with a velvety, plush texture and a structural elegance that allows the wines to age magnificently. The region's old vine heritage — with some plantings dating back to the 1850s — is a source of particular pride, producing fruit of extraordinary concentration, complexity, and character from vines that have spent decades developing deep root systems and a profound connection to the soils in which they grow.
Our Range
Maxwell Ellen Street Shiraz — McLaren Vale — The flagship expression and one of McLaren Vale's most distinguished old vine Shirazes. Harvested from a small block of craggy, gnarled Shiraz vines planted in 1953 on the soils of an old riverbed, situated between the winery and the road that has been known for over 100 years as Ellen Street. These ancient vines bear some of the most concentrated fruit on the estate, but in very small quantities — an average crop of less than two tonnes per acre. Aged for 18 months in old French and American oak (approximately 25% new). Deep purple with rich aromas of blackberry and dark cherry paired with delicate oak and floral hints. Generous blackberry and cherry on the palate with a touch of raspberry, balanced by chalky tannins and a long, intricate finish. A wine of genuine cellaring potential — best decanted before serving and capable of maturing for ten years or more.
Maxwell Silver Hammer Shiraz — McLaren Vale — A deeply expressive McLaren Vale Shiraz sourced from numerous parcels across the Maxwell estate, offering a consistency of style and quality that makes it one of the winery's most reliable and characterful expressions. Deep purple with the scent of dark forest fruits and a hint of toast. Overflowing with juicy blackberry and dark cherry flavours on the palate, complemented by silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and rounded oak. A wine of immediate appeal and genuine depth — outstanding with grilled red meats, slow-cooked lamb, and hearty pasta dishes.
Maxwell Little Demon Cabernet Merlot — McLaren Vale — An approachable and generously flavoured blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that showcases McLaren Vale's ability to produce red wines of warmth, richness, and immediate drinking pleasure. Enticing aromas of raspberry, chocolate, and dried herbs on the nose. Plum, blackberry, and cherry on the palate with well-balanced tannins and subtle hints of vanilla oak. Soft, round body and a long-lasting finish. Made to enjoy upon release but with the structure to continue maturing for five to ten years.
How to Enjoy Maxwell Wines
All three Maxwell expressions are best served at 16–18°C in a generous red wine glass. The Ellen Street Shiraz rewards decanting for 30–60 minutes to open its full aromatic complexity and is an outstanding partner for roasted lamb, venison, and dishes with earthy, umami depth. The Silver Hammer Shiraz is equally at home with a weekend barbecue or a slow-cooked beef short rib. The Little Demon Cabernet Merlot is the most versatile of the three — excellent with pasta, pizza, grilled chicken, and a wide range of everyday dishes.
