Production Notes

In 1880, Louis-Alexandre Marnier had the eccentric idea to combine refined French cognac with a rare variety of bitter orange from the Caribbean, marking the beginning of Grand Marnier. The story is one of loyal friendship between two bold innovators, Louis-Alexandre Marnier Lapostolle and César Ritz, famous founder of the Ritz Hotel. When Louis-Alexandre created his recipe, he named it Curaçao Marnier, but César Ritz came up with the name 'Grand Marnier,' declaring "A Grand Name for a Grand Liqueur!" Louis-Alexandre immediately trademarked the iconic bottle—inspired by the silhouette of a traditional cognac still—the red ribbon and the wax seal, elements that became the signature of Cordon Rouge, still used today. The aromatic Citrus Bigaradia is the only variety of orange used to make Grand Marnier, lending an intriguing twist to the palate with its distinctive bitter-sweet character.

History

Oranges and cognac form an essential component of Grand Marnier's unique flavour profile, creating a liqueur of exceptional quality and consistency. In the 19th century, when Louis-Alexandre created this blend, oranges were an exotic luxury consumed mostly on special occasions, making Grand Marnier a symbol of refinement and celebration. The aromatic Citrus Bigaradia oranges are carefully selected from the Caribbean, where ideal growing conditions produce fruit with intense aromatic oils and the perfect balance of bitterness and sweetness. These rare bitter oranges are combined with refined French cognac that has been aged in oak barrels, developing the complex vanilla, hazelnut and toffee notes that balance the vibrant citrus character. This meticulous selection and blending process ensures that every bottle of Grand Marnier delivers the same harmonious finish and exceptional quality that has made it an icon of French craftsmanship for over 140 years.
