Reviews

96 points - Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate
"This is a beautiful wine, from a very good, structural year, and while the oak is a feature currently, the density and weight of the fruit will consume it—and that's not going to take very long at all. This is a wonderful wine here."

96 points - JamesSuckling.com
"There is such a lovely freshness and energy to this wine and a generous yet integrated amount of oak with a floral-toned finish."

96 points - Marcus Ellis, Halliday Wine Companion
"This is engaging now, but the structure will see it age well, too."

Winemaking Notes

Block 6 was handpicked on 25 March 2022, producing a moderate crop of 7.33 tonnes. The grapes were crushed and de-stemmed and spent 13 days on skins in the traditional open fermenters with twice daily plunging. The wine was then basket pressed and matured for 19 months in 30% new French and American oak puncheons. Bottled in March 2024. Long held in high esteem as one of McLaren Vale's finest Shiraz plantings, Block 6 Shiraz continues the tradition at Kay Brothers of producing full-bodied red wines that have the grace and pedigree to age for decades. Handpicked and fermented in the original open top fermenters, Block 6 Shiraz is a wine of great strength, deep complexity and amazing vibrancy. The Block 6 vineyard faces east and rows run north south with significant undulation. The vines are cane pruned with the canes wrapped onto the top wire of the low lying trellis. The present 1.5 hectares comprises a corner of red loam, some heavy clay in the middle of the block and gravelly alluvial soils on the lower side. The underlying "South Maslin Sands" geology is extremely complex containing layers of glauconite, limestone, sandstone and siltstone. Technical: Alcohol 14%, RS 1.8 g/L, pH 3.53, TA 6.5 g/L, unfined and vegan friendly.

Vintage Conditions

The 2022 vintage season began with good winter rainfall which carried on into spring. Temperatures were quite cool for the second year in a row. Warmer weather arrived in March just as the harvest was beginning. This allowed generous flavour development which produced wines with densely concentrated fruit. The 2022 vintage marks the 130th anniversary of the Block 6 Shiraz vines, planted in 1892 by Bert and Fred Kay, and the 38th vintage of Block 6 Shiraz as a single vineyard wine. The combination of good winter rainfall, cool spring temperatures and warmer weather in March created ideal conditions for producing Shiraz with exceptional concentration and structure, showcasing dense ruby colour with purple hue, alluring aromas of musk, dried herbs, marzipan and charcuterie, and a palate of rich dark berry fruits, mulberry, black olive tapenade and dark chocolate with super fine chalky tannins providing great length.
