Located in the southern part of winegrowing Burgundy, Château de Varennes is situated in Quincié-en-Beaujolais, north of Lyon. This 11th-century château has been owned and operated by members of the Charveriat family since 1809. The Gamay grape is king here, capable of subtle expressions when planted in top-quality siliceous and granitic terroirs. The vines are planted in granitic soil on south-facing slopes around the château, with such conditions optimal for encouraging the ripening of Gamay and its characteristic expression of red fruit.

Winemaking Notes

The wine undergoes fermenting maceration in thermoregulated open vats for approximately 10 days, allowing optimal extraction of colour, flavour and tannins whilst preserving the fresh fruit character. Following fermentation, the wine is aged in stainless steel vats for 6 to 7 months. This approach maintains the vibrant fruitiness and floral aromatics that define quality Beaujolais Villages, avoiding oak influence to showcase the pure expression of Gamay from the granitic terroirs surrounding Château de Varennes.

Vintage Conditions

The 2023 vintage in Beaujolais provided excellent conditions for Gamay production. The vines at Château de Varennes are planted in granitic soil on south-facing slopes around the château, benefiting from optimal sun exposure and excellent drainage. These conditions encourage the ripening of the Gamay grape and its characteristic expression of red fruit, particularly raspberry and blackcurrant. The siliceous and granitic terroirs impart distinctive mineral characteristics and fresh acidity to the wine. The combination of favourable vintage conditions, ideal terroir and the Charveriat family's generations of winemaking expertise results in a wine that fully expresses the fruitiness and freshness for which Beaujolais Villages is renowned.
