Jean-Marc Burgaud has been dubbed "Monsieur Côte du Py" by Bourgogne Aujourd'hui magazine. His eponymous Beaujolais estate boasts vines planted between 1940 and 1974 at high density using massal selection. "Judge a domaine on its entry point wine," says Jean-Marc. "I do as much work in the vineyard and cellar on this wine as I do on my Côte du Py." This Beaujolais Lantignié is considered an excellent value and a benchmark for the Beaujolais-Villages appellation, showcasing the quality and style that has led Neal Martin to describe Jean-Marc as "a master working in the Côte du Py."

Winemaking Notes

Jean-Marc works exclusively with estate-grown grapes from gobelet-trained vines planted at high density. "We don't make wine with computers; we do wine by hand!" he states emphatically. The grapes are whole bunch fermented using 'la vraie vinification Beaujolaise', with juice fermented between 23 to 28°C and only one pump-over per day. Maceration lasts approximately seven days for the Beaujolais Villages, with pre-fermentation maceration completely avoided. The wine is aged in concrete tanks to preserve fruit expression and freshness. "Gamay has a difficult relationship with oak," explains Jean-Marc. There are no set recipes here—Jean-Marc makes judgements based on intimate knowledge of the grapes and extensive winemaking experience, tasting the fermenting wine daily to judge when the tannin level is right.

Vintage Conditions

The 2024 vintage in Beaujolais provided excellent conditions for Gamay production. Jean-Marc originally hails from Lantignié, where he has 4.5 hectares of Beaujolais Villages vineyards planted on granite soils. The grapes come from old vines over 60 years old, planted at high density using massal selection. "Gamay needs high density to reduce its natural vigour," says Jean-Marc. According to him, a good Beaujolais must be made from ripe grapes to ensure mature tannins. The granite soils of Lantignié impart distinctive mineral characteristics and fine, grainy tannins to the wine. The combination of old vines, granite terroir and Jean-Marc's meticulous approach to ripeness and tannin extraction results in wines of exceptional balance, purity and ageing potential.
