Greenock Creek Vineyards

Australia

About

Greenock Creek Vineyards is dedicated to unearthing the alluring mysteries of diverse sites across the Barossa Valley's western edge. Established in 1984, the estate specialises exclusively in single-vineyard wines that faithfully express the nuances of the region's distinct sub-regions. From the plush, silky power of Marananga to the earthy, gamey character of Seppeltsfield with its rustic, gravelly tannins, and the aromatic florals and sweet spices that float above Moppa's flinty bass notes, each parish reveals its own personality. The estate's meticulous approach extends from vineyard to cellar, where everything is handled gently in tiny batches. Grapes are handpicked and loaded into small open-top, poly-coated concrete fermenters, with all lots basket-pressed before going to oak. This unwavering pursuit of terroir expression famously earned Greenock Creek an unmatched eight perfect 100-point scores from the prestigious Wine Advocate magazine.

Barossa Valley

History

Since its establishment in 1984, Greenock Creek has been on a mission to dig deeper into the Barossa Valley's western edge and reveal the pure, powerful, succulent expression of its grapes—especially Shiraz. The estate's vineyards span the region's most characterful sub-regions, where thin sandy-loam topsoils give way to diverse geological formations including bluestone, siltstone, marble, limestone, ironstone, flint, and quartz. With the arrival of chief winemaker Alex Peel in 2018, Greenock Creek sharpened its focus and responded to the land and seasons with refined practices in both vineyard and cellar. The estate has improved vine and soil health, adopted drip irrigation to prevent water stress, and adapted pruning, training, and trellising to promote natural freshness. In the winery, additional fermenters ensure fruit is picked at perfect ripeness, whilst cooler ferments allow more nuanced flavours to develop. Softer pressing refines the wines' feel and clarity, and oak selection has become more deliberate, suiting each vintage and vineyard to realise the fruit's full potential in texture, structure, purity, intensity, complexity, and freshness.
