Tasting Notes

Appearance

Translucent ruby with the delicate clarity of a single vineyard, hand-harvested cool-climate Pinot Noir — the luminous, ethereal colour of an inaugural estate release from the Plenty Region that delivers character, style, and structure from the very first vintage.

Aroma

Ethereal and aromatic — cherry, rhubarb, and pomegranate layered over a satisfying autumnal earthiness, with hints of spice, dried herbs, and tea leaf adding savoury lift. A slightly liquoricey character with subtle brick-dust influence, and the expressive, layered bouquet of a cool-climate Pinot Noir grown with care and harvested by hand.

Palate

Silky and expressive — seamlessly structured, with fine integration of silky tannins and gentle oak. Velvety smooth with latent power extending to the finish, which lingers with grace and the savoury complexity of dried herbs, tea leaf, and autumnal earth.

Pairs With

Roast duck, salmon, mushroom risotto, pinot-friendly charcuterie, and soft washed-rind cheeses — the silky tannins, cherry and rhubarb fruit, and savoury earthy finish make Five Vineyard Estate Pinot Noir a deeply satisfying and natural partner for the finest food at the table. Serve slightly cool.

Is It Worth Ageing?

The 2024 vintage’s excellent conditions and the wine’s latent power and fine tannin structure suggest real cellaring potential of 5–8 years. Drink now to enjoy the vibrant cherry and rhubarb fruit at its most expressive, or cellar for added complexity and integration. Store on its side in a cool, dark environment and serve slightly cool at 14–16°C.

What’s Similar?

Fans of Five Vineyard Estate Pinot Noir may also enjoy cool-climate Pinot Noir from the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula for a comparable ethereal, savoury style, or explore Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits for the European benchmark of this elegant, earth-driven expression. Within the Five Vineyard range, the Estate Shiraz offers a bolder, darker expression of the estate’s cool-climate character.

Producer History

Named for the five members of the Vella family — parents Paul and Caroline and siblings Alex, Sam, and Olivia — FIVE Vineyard is located in the suburb of Mernda, just 45 minutes from the Melbourne CBD. The family planted the first vines in 2019, and construction began in 2021 on an architecturally designed winery, restaurant, and event centre set among 14 hectares of vines. The estate is planted to Sangiovese, Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir, with the first vintage produced in 2022. The inaugural Estate Pinot Noir is the fullest and most expressive statement yet of what Five Vineyard is capable of — ethereal, aromatic, and unmistakably estate.
