Tasting Notes

Appearance

This distinguished Bas-Armagnac presents a beautiful golden copper colour with brilliant clarity and warm, luminous depth, displaying the exceptional quality characteristic of four decades of patient ageing in oak barrels at the Delord family distillery in Lannepax, the ancestral home of one of Armagnac’s most celebrated and visionary producers.

Aroma

The nose is elegant and inviting, with orange peel, candied fruit and nougat creating a sophisticated and beautifully layered aromatic profile. The bouquet reflects forty years of ageing in Delord’s treasured oak barrels, with each element in perfect harmony — a testament to the extraordinary patience and expertise of the Delord family and their prized Sier Armagnac alambics that produce less than 30 litres of eau-de-vie per hour.

Palate

Soft and round on the palate with a medium-bodied profile, the 1984 vintage delivers nuances of light toffee, dried fruits and white pepper in exceptional balance. The hallmark Delord style — very rounded, soft and approachable — is evident throughout, with a long, warming finish that speaks eloquently of four decades of careful oak maturation. An outstanding Armagnac of genuine distinction and refinement.

Pairs With

This exceptional Bas-Armagnac is a natural companion to dark chocolate, crème brûlée, candied orange peel, dried figs, nougat, or enjoyed as a contemplative digestif after a special meal, making it the ultimate gift for those born in 1984 and a treasured addition to any serious spirits collection.

Production Notes

Delord Bas Armagnac 1984 is produced at the family distillery in Lannepax, Bas-Armagnac, using Colombard, Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche grape varieties. Distillation — the most essential and fascinating stage in Armagnac production — takes place from the beginning of November through to the end of December, using the family’s treasured old Sier Armagnac alambics that produce less than 30 litres of eau-de-vie per hour. This slow, traditional distillation process is central to the exceptional quality and complexity of Delord’s Armagnac. The eau-de-vie is then aged in one of more than 700 oak barrels in Delord’s cellars, which protect and age Armagnac dating from the 20th century to the present day. Delord’s vintage Armagnac range is one of the most complete in existence, with vintages from 1900 to 2006 — only 33 vintage years unavailable. Bottles indicate a bottling date, as it is only age in wood that truly matters.

History

The 1984 vintage Armagnac from Delord represents a rare and exceptional piece of French spirits heritage. Bas-Armagnac, situated in the Gascony region of south-west France, is the most prestigious of the three Armagnac appellations, renowned for producing eau-de-vie of exceptional finesse, complexity and aromatic depth. The region’s sandy soils — known as sables fauves — are ideally suited to the Colombard, Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche grape varieties that form the foundation of Delord’s Armagnac. Thanks to Delord’s extraordinary vision in storing exceptional Armagnacs for such extended periods, the 1984 vintage has had over forty years to develop its remarkable complexity of orange peel, candied fruit, nougat, light toffee, dried fruits and white pepper — a living testament to the patience, expertise and heritage of the Delord family and the unique terroir of Bas-Armagnac.
