Tasting Notes

Appearance

This distinguished Bas-Armagnac presents a rich, deep amber colour with warm golden reflections and brilliant clarity, displaying the exceptional quality characteristic of an assembly of Armagnacs aged between 25 and 45 years in oak barrels at the Delord family distillery in Lannepax — the ancestral home of one of Armagnac’s most celebrated and visionary producers, presented beautifully in a wooden gift box.

Aroma

The nose is elegant and deeply complex, with notes of orange flower, star anise and hazelnut creating a sophisticated and beautifully layered aromatic profile. The bouquet reflects the extraordinary depth and character that only an assembly of Armagnacs aged between 25 and 45 years can achieve, with each element in perfect harmony — a testament to the extraordinary patience and expertise of the Delord family and their prized Sier Armagnac alambics that produce less than 30 litres of eau-de-vie per hour.

Palate

Rounded, soft and beautifully approachable — the hallmark Delord style — the palate delivers the orange flower, star anise and hazelnut of the nose with exceptional depth, warmth and complexity. The finish is long and deeply satisfying, with the extraordinary concentration and character that only decades of careful oak maturation can achieve. An outstanding Armagnac of genuine distinction, refinement and historic depth.

Pairs With

This exceptional Bas-Armagnac is a natural companion to dark chocolate, hazelnut praline, orange tart, crème brûlée, dried figs, or enjoyed as a contemplative digestif after a very special meal, making it the ultimate gift for those born in 1963 and a truly extraordinary addition to any serious spirits collection.

Production Notes

Delord Bas Armagnac 1963 700mL is an assembly of Armagnacs aged between 25 and 45 years, produced at the family distillery in Lannepax, Bas-Armagnac, using Colombard, Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche grape varieties. Distillation — the most essential and fascinating stage in Armagnac production — takes place from the beginning of November through to the end of December, using the family’s treasured old Sier Armagnac alambics that produce less than 30 litres of eau-de-vie per hour. The eau-de-vie is then aged in one of more than 700 oak barrels in Delord’s cellars, which protect and age Armagnac dating from the 20th century to the present day. Presented in a beautiful wooden gift box with a distinctive metal label, the 1963 expression is an ideal gift for someone born in this year — a spirit of extraordinary depth, complexity and historic character.

History

The 1963 Armagnac from Delord represents a rare and exceptional piece of French spirits heritage. Bas-Armagnac, situated in the Gascony region of south-west France, is the most prestigious of the three Armagnac appellations, renowned for producing eau-de-vie of exceptional finesse, complexity and aromatic depth. Thanks to Delord’s extraordinary vision in storing exceptional Armagnacs for such extended periods, they have the resource to assemble blends of outstanding quality and consistency. Their Armagnac style — very rounded, soft and easy to drink — has made them amongst the most successful producers, with a vintage range from 1900 to 2006 with only 33 years unavailable. Their blends are unbeatable on a price-to-quality ratio, and their XO Premium and Authentique expressions continue to collect prestigious medals — a living testament to the patience, expertise and heritage of the Delord family.
