Tasting Notes

Appearance

De Bortoli Bella Riva Sangiovese 2024 presents a medium purple hue with excellent clarity — the hallmark of a classic varietal Sangiovese sourced from premium plots in Rutherglen and Northern Heathcote, fermented in closed and open vats with careful extraction of colour and tannin through turnovers and plunging. Vibrant and immediately inviting in the glass.

Aroma

Red and black cherry lead the aromatics with a bright, vibrant classic Sangiovese generosity — five spice adds an intriguing, warming complexity that is immediately distinctive, while plums provide a rich, dark fruit depth and subtle earthiness adds a savoury, terroir-driven character that speaks eloquently of Rutherglen and Northern Heathcote. A nose of genuine varietal authenticity, regional expression and De Bortoli craft.

Palate

Bright, vibrant and juicy on the palate — red and black cherry lead with a lively, fresh intensity, while plums add a satisfying dark fruit richness and five spice delivers a warming, savoury complexity through the mid-palate. The subtle earthiness adds a classic Sangiovese character and depth, with the refined texture and impressive length delivering a finish of genuine elegance and varietal authenticity. Three months in used large French oak casks adds a gentle integration and softness without masking the vibrant fruit character.

Pairs With

A natural match for classic Italian-inspired dishes — pasta al ragù, osso buco, wood-fired pizza, grilled lamb chops or a classic Florentine bistecca. Equally outstanding alongside roast duck, mushroom risotto, aged pecorino or a classic antipasto spread. The red cherry, five spice, plum and savoury earthiness make this one of the most authentic and rewarding Australian Sangioveses available. Serve at 16–18°C. Enjoy now or cellar with confidence for 3–5 years.
