Winemaking Notes

Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz 2024 is crafted from fruit grown by the Mullany and Gleeson families across four vineyards in the Hilltops district around Young, NSW — destemmed and fermented in open fermenters with twice daily pump overs and 12 to 16 days on skins, extracting the exceptional colour, tannin and fruit concentration that defines this wine. Post ferment, the wine was racked to French oak puncheons and barriques, around 10% new, for 12 months of maturation — a careful and considered approach to oak that adds complexity and structure whilst preserving the bright, fruit-driven elegance and cool-climate freshness of outstanding Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz character. Tim Kirk, Clonakilla.

Vintage Conditions

The 2024 vintage in the Hilltops district delivered lower volumes of very high-quality fruit — spring rainfall was surprisingly healthy given the forecast for a strong El Niño effect, whilst October frost reduced yields in some sites. The warm weather arrived mid to late summer, with excellent ripening conditions prevailing to deliver rich, ripe aromatics and generally intense fruit flavours of outstanding cool-climate distinction. The nett result is a Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz of exceptional concentration, elegance and enduring Hilltops character — as Tim Kirk notes, a wine to drink now or cellar with confidence for 10 or more years.
