Campari is one of the world’s most iconic aperitifs — a vibrant red, intensely aromatic, and distinctively bitter Italian liqueur created by Gaspare Campari in Novara in 1860, from a secret recipe that remains known only to the very few people in charge of its production to this day. Derived from the infusion of bitter herbs, aromatic plants, and fruit in alcohol and water, Campari has remained unchanged since its creation — a contemporary and charismatic classic that is as essential behind the bar as it is captivating in the glass.

Appearance

Vivid, luminous red — one of the most instantly recognisable colours in the world of spirits, and a symbol of Italian style and passion since 1860.

Aroma

Intense and captivating — bitter herbs, aromatic plants, and fruit weave together in a complex and deeply distinctive bouquet that is immediately and unmistakably Campari. The exact number of ingredients remains a closely guarded secret, with estimates ranging from 20 to 80 — only alcohol and water are confirmed.

Palate

Distinctive, bitter, and deeply satisfying — the hallmark bitter taste of Campari is balanced by the complexity of its secret botanical blend, delivering a drinking experience that is as versatile as it is unique. Clean, persistent, and endlessly intriguing.

Serving Suggestions

Exceptional with soda water and a slice of orange as a classic Italian aperitivo. Outstanding in a Campari Spritz with Prosecco and soda. And for the definitive Campari experience — the Negroni:

The Negroni
30ml Campari
30ml gin
30ml red vermouth
Orange slice to garnish

Pour all ingredients directly into a rocks glass filled with ice. Stir briefly and garnish with a slice of orange.

Production Notes

Campari is produced from the infusion of bitter herbs, aromatic plants, and fruit in a mixture of alcohol and water — a recipe created by Gaspare Campari in 1860 that has remained unchanged ever since. The exact botanical blend is one of the most closely guarded secrets in the spirits world, with the number of ingredients variously attributed to 20, 60, or even 80. Only alcohol and water are publicly confirmed. The formula is known only to the very few people directly involved in the production process — a secret that has been kept for over 165 years and shows no sign of being revealed.

Producer History

Campari was created in 1860 by Gaspare Campari — a master drink maker and founder of the company — as the result of his experiments in concocting new beverages in Novara, Italy. His recipe produced an aperitif of such distinctive character, vibrant colour, and intense bitter flavour that it became a symbol of Italian style and excellence almost immediately, and has remained so for over 165 years. The Negroni — invented in 1919 when Count Negroni asked his bartender to add gin rather than soda to his Americano, in honour of his last trip to London — cemented Campari’s place in cocktail history and on the IBA’s official cocktail list, where it remains to this day. Campari is an icon of passionate Italian aperitivo culture, unchanged and unrivalled since the day Gaspare Campari first mixed his secret recipe in 1860.
