Tasting Notes

Appearance

This distinguished German Weinbrand presents a beautiful dark topaz colour with warm, radiant clarity, displaying the exceptional quality characteristic of Asbach’s celebrated secret maturing and finishing process — a spirit with a heritage stretching back to 1892, when Hugo Asbach founded the company in Rüdesheim am Rhein and coined the very term Weinbrand for German brandy.

Aroma

The nose is elegant and immediately inviting, with a sophisticated fusion of vinous and spicy, woody notes creating a harmoniously blended aromatic profile of genuine character and distinction. The bouquet reflects the extraordinary care of Asbach’s traditional two-stage copper still distillation process and the natural aroma substances drawn from Limousin oak casks — a testament to over 130 years of German brandy craftsmanship and expertise.

Palate

Full bodied and beautifully structured on the palate, with the natural sweetness of ripe grapes combining harmoniously with spicy notes of oak wood in exceptional balance. Slightly smoky notes of wood and cocoa on the finish add complexity and depth, delivering a long, satisfying conclusion that speaks eloquently of three years of careful maturation in small Limousin oak casks — a German Weinbrand of genuine elegance and distinction.

Pairs With

This exceptional German Weinbrand is a natural companion to dark chocolate, cocoa desserts, dried fruits, spiced nuts, aged cheeses, or enjoyed neat or on the rocks as a contemplative digestif, making it ideal for gifting, entertaining and any occasion that calls for a brandy of genuine German heritage and craftsmanship.

Production Notes

Asbach Original Aged 3 Years Brandy 700mL is produced using a traditional two-stage copper still distillation process — both highly time-consuming and labour-intensive — that first produces a raw spirit of approximately 40% volume, before a second, significantly more complex distillation yields the fine spirit of approximately 75% volume, also known as the heart. This fine spirit is then matured in small oak casks made from Limousin oak aged for a number of years — wood with especially large pores that is air-permeable, allowing the spirit to breathe and mature in an exchange process with air. The fine spirit draws natural aroma and colour substances from the cask, gaining its characteristic dark topaz colouring and subtle, harmonious wooden accents. Asbach’s secret maturing and finishing process brings the complex production to a close, giving Asbach its radiant topaz hue and characteristic bouquet. Asbach is the only distillery in Germany that employs its own cooper, devoted primarily to the repair and care of Limousin oak casks and large Spessart oak vats.

History

Asbach’s history dates back to 1892, when Hugo Asbach (1868–1935) founded the company in the town of Rüdesheim am Rhein. A native of Cologne, Hugo Asbach learned the distillery trade at the local Export-Company for German Cognac and further refined his knowledge in France. After World War I, when the Treaty of Versailles decreed that the word Cognac could only be used for French products, Hugo Asbach coined the term Weinbrand for German brandy — a term that in 1923 became an official classification under German wine law. This extraordinary act of innovation and vision established Asbach as one of Germany’s most celebrated and historically significant brandy producers, a legacy that endures in every bottle of Asbach Original to this day.
