History & Heritage
Skillogalee was established in 1970 on a property in the hills above the Clare Valley township of Sevenhill — one of the most historically significant and climatically distinctive subregions of the Clare Valley. The estate takes its name from Skillogalee Creek, which runs through the property, and from the old colonial term skillogalee — a thin, watery gruel that was the staple diet of early Australian settlers and convicts. The name is a reminder of the hardship and determination of the region's early pioneers, and a fitting emblem for a winery that has always valued substance over style.
The winery was purchased by David and Diana Palmer in 1989, and it is under their stewardship — and now that of the next generation of the Palmer family — that Skillogalee has grown into one of the Clare Valley's most celebrated and consistently excellent estates. The Palmers' commitment to hand-crafted, minimal intervention winemaking, sustainable farming, and the preservation of the estate's old vine heritage has produced a body of work that stands as one of the finest achievements in Clare Valley winemaking.

The Region: Clare Valley, South Australia
The Clare Valley is one of South Australia's oldest and most esteemed wine regions — a long, narrow valley running roughly north to south approximately 130 kilometres north of Adelaide, encompassing a series of distinct sub-valleys and ridges that create a remarkable diversity of soils, aspects, and microclimates within a relatively compact area. The Clare Valley's climate is continental — warm to hot summer days, dramatically cool nights, and cold winters. The region's diurnal temperature variation during the growing season is among the most pronounced of any Australian wine region, regularly exceeding 15–20°C between daytime highs and overnight lows. This dramatic swing between warm days and cold nights allows grapes to ripen fully while retaining the natural acidity, aromatic complexity, and structural elegance that define the Clare Valley style. The Sevenhill subregion, where Skillogalee's estate vineyards are located, is one of the Clare Valley's most distinctive and prestigious sites. Situated at elevations of 400–500 metres above sea level in the wooded hills above the valley floor, Sevenhill is cooler and more sheltered than the lower valley sites, producing wines of greater finesse, aromatic complexity, and natural acidity. Skillogalee Basket Press Estate Shiraz — Clare Valley — Crafted from low-yielding, dry-grown estate vines planted in the 1970s on the wooded hills of the Skillogalee property. After basket pressing, matured for 16 months in 100% French oak hogsheads. Deep, intense ruby red with a complex, layered bouquet of dark fruits, spices, and earthiness. Plush, silky mid-palate with dark berry flavours, fennel seed spice, and a long, structured tannin finish. A wine of genuine depth and cellaring potential.
Skillogalee Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon — Hand-crafted in small quantities from low-yielding, dry-grown estate vines over 50 years of age on the high natural contours of the single estate property. Composed predominantly of Cabernet Sauvignon with occasional small selections of Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Cold soaked, fermented in small batch open tanks, basket pressed, and aged for up to two years in predominantly French oak hogsheads. Rich, dark ruby red with complex aromas of ripe black fruit, mint, green bell pepper, tobacco, cedar, vanilla, violets, blackcurrant spice, and chocolate. Plush and silky mid-palate with a long, finely structured tannin finish.
Skillogalee Sparkling Shiraz NV — Clare Valley — A non-vintage blend combining estate-grown old-vine Shiraz from the Clare Valley, crafted using traditional sparkling winemaking techniques. Deep ruby-red with vibrant crimson highlights and a persistent fine bead of bubbles. Aromas of ripe blackberry and plum with gentle spice notes of dark cherry, mulberry, cinnamon, and clove. How to Enjoy Skillogalee Wines
The Basket Press Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are best served at 16–18°C in a generous red wine glass — allow them to breathe for 20–30 minutes, or decant for an hour to open their full aromatic complexity. Both wines reward extended cellaring, with the Cabernet Sauvignon in particular developing extraordinary secondary complexity over ten to fifteen years. The Sparkling Shiraz is best served lightly chilled at 12–14°C and is a magnificent partner for roasted meats, aged cheeses, and celebratory occasions.
