Winery & Vintage Info

Established in 1974 on Tasmania’s east coast, the vineyard at Bream Creek is one of the oldest in the state. Initially comprising 5 hectares primarily planted with Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon, it also included smaller plantings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Gewurztraminer.
In August 1990, Fred Peacock acquired the vineyard, expanding the Pinot Noir plantings and introducing Sauvignon Blanc and Schonburger, a rare German varietal with one of the earliest commercial plantings in the Southern Hemisphere. Through Fred's dedication and passion, this pristine vineyard now exemplifies grape varieties ideally suited to the cool maritime climate of Tasmania's east coast.
The vineyard is situated on a north-east ridge overlooking Marion Bay and the Tasman Sea. This combination of gently sloping terrain, coastal location, and maritime influence provides optimal ripening conditions for premium quality grapes. The long, mild seasons feature cool, frost-free springs, long sunny summer days moderated by gentle sea breezes, and an extended autumn ripening period that enhances flavour development. Additionally, the surrounding topography and forest offer natural protection from strong, cold winds.
The soils are deep, ranging from brown to black clay loams, with some small stones present on higher ground. Careful attention has been given to matching grape varieties to the diverse soil types within the vineyard.
All vines are vertical-shoot positioned, with most management tasks, including pruning and picking, performed by hand. The vineyard produces small berries and modest bunch sizes, resulting in very modest yields that enhance typical varietal characteristics, ideal for truly cool-climate winemaking.
The Bream Creek Riesling is a pristine Tasmanian Riesling, with an intense mid palate and a dry finish.
