Tasting Notes

Appearance

Vibrant ruby and scarlet in colour, displaying the wine's youthful energy and careful winemaking.

Aroma

A lifted nose shows white, green and black peppercorn medley, with cherry ripe, blackberry and plum, followed, in their wake, by subtle spices: star anise, clove, ground cumin and vanilla. The aromatic complexity reveals the wine's barrel maturation and thoughtful blending.

Palate

On the palate the wine is fresh, bright, well-woven, and fruit-forward, with plum surrounding a core of sweet cherry. Pomegranate molasses lingers with blackberry and raspberry fruit sweetness, before the wine closes out a palate that shows restraint and balance in its fruitful, acid, tannin and oak elements.

Pairs With

This versatile Margaret River Shiraz pairs beautifully with grilled lamb cutlets, beef Wellington, mushroom risotto, aged hard cheeses, duck confit, and Mediterranean herb-crusted dishes, making it perfect for both casual dining and special occasions.

Crafted from individually berry-sorted parcels and aged in French oak barrels, this wine represents outstanding value from one of Margaret River's most prestigious estates.

Winemaking Notes

Selected Shiraz parcels were individually berry sorted and fermented in closed and open fermenters after cold soaking, before being plunged and pumped over daily. Following completion of primary fermentation, the wine was run to new, one and two-year-old barrels (228L and 600L format) for malolactic fermentation. The wine underwent malolactic in barrels and after six months, the various components were blended and aged in barrels for a further eight months. After final assemblage the wine was fined and readied for bottling. This meticulous approach ensures optimal extraction of colour, flavour and tannin whilst preserving the wine's natural fruit purity and regional character.

Vintage Conditions

The 2022 vintage provided fantastic conditions at Leeuwin Estate. Spring 2021 was typically wet and windy, with milder temperatures in September and October delaying shoot growth and flowering dates. Sunny conditions in early-mid November produced a surge in vine growth and rapid flowering. Warm conditions throughout January and February, coupled with the welcome arrival of the daily sea breeze, created ideal ripening conditions. Late March and early April saw a small window of rainfall, leading to a classically prolonged warm ripening period for the reds. These mild sunny conditions allowed wonderful ripe tannins and flavours to develop, with the Shiraz harvested through the first three weeks of April, delivering fruit of exceptional quality and balance.
