The 2017 Tyrrell's Shiraz is a classic medium-bodied Hunter Valley style. Deceptively ‘rich’ with a savoury pepper and charcuterie flavour mixed in good proportions with ripe red and black berry fruits. Solid colour and intensity start the wine off in the right direction, while the palate shows up-front fruit sweetness with our hallmark savoury crunchy tannins and fresh moreish finish. Vintage conditions resulted in a combination of really ripe fruit flavours balanced by the leaner savoury ones, making this wine not only very drinkable but also adding some intrigue.

"A brother to the '18 Hunter Valley Semillon, crushed and destemmed, open-fermented, pressed to large-format used casks. This is a rich yet tightly managed wine, placing all the emphasis on fruit fruit, precisely that which should be done, especially in a year such as this. If you buy it now - and you should - put not less than 50% in the cellar, and have a glass on me, recalling it only cost $25."

Winery & Vintage Info

The 'Hunter Valley' range is quintessentially Tyrrell’s and quintessentially Hunter. It showcases the key varieties of the region – Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz. This range is made to the same high standards and style as our Winemaker’s Selection Vat 1, Vat 47 and Vat 9, in essence making our Hunter Valley range the ‘baby brothers’ of these three iconic wines.

Fermented in traditional hand plunged open vats and then matured in 4 year and older (2600L) French oak barrels. These French
‘Foudre’ casks serve to lift and freshen the fruit on the nose and palate rather than add any obvious characters of new wood. This wine is developed with a simple winemaking philosophy; choose the best fruit we can and gently encourage the savoury red fruit and soft tannins that the Hunter is famous for to shine through.
