Tasting Notes

Appearance

Deep ruby red with brilliant clarity, showcasing the wine's quality and concentration characteristic of this exceptional 2022 Nagambie Lakes Estate Shiraz crafted using traditional winemaking practices in 150-year-old open oak vats.

Aroma

A few swirls of the glass has ripe plum, blackberry and violet aromas coming through, with white pepper and boysenberry rounding out the nose. Lifted violets, spice and clove aromas create a sophisticated aromatic profile reflecting the traditional winemaking values.

Palate

The palate has a surprising initial softness, the tannin glides across the back. There is a tart cranberry acidity that knocks the balance off making it a little bit more crunchy drinking young but will do okay with a bit of age under its belt. Very much a cool-climate style Shiraz which is reflective of the 2022 vintage. The palate is bold and bright with wild berry and plum fruits finishing with supple and savoury tannins. The depth of ripe fruit is apparent, so too a sturdy, fine tannin structure. Holds a tight core of ripe, sweet black fruits, cacao, earth, dried herbs and spices laid out against a smooth palate.

Pairs With

When young this bold and fruit-forward Tahbilk Shiraz pairs beautifully with robust meat-based stews, grilled or roast beef and strong hard cheeses especially cheddar, whilst with some age look to game dishes of roast duck, venison or kangaroo and the leanness and delicate flavours of veal, with the wine's supple savoury tannins making it an excellent choice for hearty dining experiences.

Drink now over the next 2 years, rest for the following 3-5 years, then enjoy for the next 10 years. Enjoy now to 2035/2039 plus.

Reviews

"Following on from a stellar '21 vintage comes another good year and another fine example of an uber-friendly and delicious shiraz. The depth of ripe fruit is apparent, so too a sturdy, fine tannin structure to take the wine further should cellaring be your plan. Holds a tight core of ripe, sweet black fruits, cacao, earth, dried herbs and spices laid out against a smooth palate. Immediate and engaging appeal at a great price."

94 Points - Jeni Port, Halliday's Wine Companion, Published 20 March 2025

"Satisfying release of shiraz from Tahbilk. Plush plums, some vanilla, mint, gum leaf, earth and boot polish, though it's the drive of plum-like fruit that defines it. Mouthwatering acidity is part of the show too, and tannin is modest at most. Enjoyable wine."

Winemaking Notes

Tahbilk's traditional red winemaking practices of open oak vat fermentation followed by time spent in a mix of large aged and smaller new oak barrels, are honoured with this release. An honour reflected in the depth of flavour and concentration of this Estate Shiraz release. The Estate Shiraz is crafted with a commitment to traditional winemaking values. Fermentation takes place in original open vats well over 150 years old, with maturation then in similarly aged large French oak prior to bottling. Smaller French and American oak barrels are also used, with the wine from these blended back during the final filtering and bottling. The result is fruit-driven wines of much flavour and substance generally showing lifted violets, spice and clove aromas, the palate bold and bright with wild berry and plum fruits finishing with supple and savoury tannins. Further cellaring has been proven over the years to develop added character and complexity with earthy, leather and cedary/cigar box qualities coming to the fore, the tannins softening and comfortably sitting in the background.

Vintage Conditions

The only thing that you can guarantee about the harvest season every year is that there are no guarantees. The season started off slowly, summer was cool and the rainfall was low in the lead up, so the expectation was for a cracking season, mother nature had other plans. A windy spring disrupted the fruit set leading to fewer berries per bunch resulting in yields being well down, as much as 40% with some blocks. Initially we were lulled into thinking that all was going along smoothly. We ticked along at a steady pace, whites progressed nicely, the reds ripening well and then, wham, everything ripened at once and the usual vintage chaos was back. There are always two clear weeks in the winery that will either make you or break you. The first is the white/rosΓ©/red juggle and the second is the red pressa-thon. This is when we empty the fermenters and pretty much fill them straight back up. It is about finding the balance between the initial cold soak, fermentation time and rate, time on skins post fermentation and then bringing in the next parcel of fruit. And just to make it even more fun, this changes every year. With the low yields and challenges of this harvest the anticipation around the final release of the 2022 vintage Estate Whites and Reds has been answered with wines of great varietal character and concentration.
