Tasting Notes

Appearance

Deep purple with vibrant crimson hues, displaying excellent colour saturation and brilliant clarity. The wine's rich, intense appearance reflects the concentration and quality of fruit from the low-yielding vineyards of traditional family growers in the north-western Barossa Valley, whilst the depth of colour suggests the wine's bold structure and flavour intensity.

Aroma

The bouquet offers enticing aromas of blackberry compote, dark chocolate, and hints of star anise and black pepper that add complexity and spice. This aromatic profile showcases the richness of the 2021 vintage, with the traditional Barossa clones—first introduced to the region over hundreds of years ago—contributing distinctive character and depth.

Palate

Bold and expressive, the palate is layered with intense flavours of ripe blackberry, dark cherry and plum, complemented by notes of mocha and subtle hints of vanilla from oak ageing. The tannins are firm yet velvety, providing excellent structure and a long, satisfying finish that demonstrates the wine's quality and ageability. Harvested from vineyards at approximately 300-350 metres elevation across the north-western Barossa sub-regions, this wine exemplifies the signature dense and layered dark fruit character typical of this renowned Australian wine region. Enjoy now or cellar for up to 10 years.

Pairs With

This bold Shiraz pairs beautifully with grilled ribeye steak or beef brisket, slow-braised lamb shanks, barbecued ribs with smoky sauce, venison or game meats, aged Cheddar or blue cheese, and mushroom and truffle dishes, whilst its firm tannins also complement beef Wellington and rich meat pies.

Winemaking Notes
The Pirathon Silver Label Shiraz 2021 (previously known as Pirathon Shiraz) is crafted from 100% Shiraz grown from traditional Barossa clones first introduced to the region over hundreds of years ago, sourced from low-yielding vineyards of traditional family growers across the north-western Barossa Valley sub-regions of Moppa, Belvidere, Koonunga, Ebenezer and Light Pass. The vineyards, situated at approximately 300-350 metres elevation, produce fruit of exceptional concentration and character, with the low yields ensuring intense flavours of ripe blackberry, dark cherry and plum. The winemaking approach emphasises the bold, expressive nature of Barossa Shiraz whilst maintaining excellent structure and balance. Oak ageing plays a crucial role in the wine's development, with the oak at one with the wine, blending harmoniously to add sweetness and texture alongside spice and sandalwood characters that complement the enticing aromas of blackberry compote, dark chocolate, star anise and black pepper. The result is a wine with firm yet velvety tannins that provide excellent structure and a long, satisfying finish, with subtle hints of vanilla and mocha adding complexity without overwhelming the intense dark fruit character. This vegan-friendly wine has won many awards throughout the years, and the 2021 vintage maintains that level of premium consistency, offering wow factor at a mid-range price point. Made for immediate enjoyment or cellar for the next decade, the Pirathon Silver Label Shiraz is the solution for those seeking a reliable yet impressive wine for intimate or higher-profile occasions.

Vintage Conditions
The 2021 vintage in the Barossa Valley showcased the richness and intensity that have made this region one of Australia's most famous wine-producing areas, particularly renowned for world-class Shiraz. The growing season delivered excellent conditions for the traditional Barossa clones planted in the low-yielding vineyards of the north-western Barossa, allowing the fruit to achieve optimal ripeness whilst developing the signature dense and layered dark fruit character—plums, figs and blackberries—typical of this sub-region. The vineyards' elevation of approximately 300-350 metres provided ideal conditions for developing the wine's bold and expressive character, with the traditional family growers' careful vineyard management ensuring fruit of exceptional quality and concentration. The 2021 vintage produced grapes with deep purple colour and vibrant crimson hues, reflecting the intensity and richness of the season. The fruit displayed enticing aromatics of blackberry compote and dark chocolate, complemented by the spice and complexity that define premium Barossa Shiraz. The combination of favourable vintage conditions, low-yielding old vines and meticulous winemaking has resulted in a wine that exemplifies the excellence of the 2021 vintage, delivering outstanding flavour depth and persistence with firm yet velvety tannins and a long, satisfying finish. This award-winning wine demonstrates why the Barossa Valley remains one of Australia's oldest and most premium wine regions, offering exceptional quality and wow factor at a reasonable price point.
