Winemaking Notes

Piano Piano Sophie's Block Chardonnay 2024 is crafted using traditional Burgundian techniques from grapes hand-picked on 26th February and 12th March. The grapes were de-stemmed and gently pressed, with wild fermentation occurring with the vineyard's indigenous yeast in French oak barriques and hogsheads including 22% new oak. There was no malolactic fermentation and limited barrel stirring to maintain the acid drive and structure of the wine, creating refined elegance with enticing notes of dried herbs, cashew, subtle grapefruit and mineral nuances complemented by well-balanced oak. Sophie's Block is situated on the coolest part of the site at 400m altitude on South East facing slope in deep decomposed granitic topsoil over rich clay. This cooler mesoclimate enhances the delicate but powerful flavours in the grapes. Five different clones, including the Bernard clones, have been close planted at 1.2m x 2.4m rows to maximise intensity and complexity. The wine delivers vibrant complexity and lengthy finish, underscoring the wine's distinguished character from famous Beechworth region known for iconic wines.

Vintage Conditions

The 2024 vintage in Beechworth was a cooler and wetter than average growing season with no extreme heat, creating exceptional conditions for Chardonnay with refined elegance. The season was an excellent season for the whites with the final two critical ripening months drying out, allowing the grapes to ripen disease-free. This with consistently warm but not hot weather enabled the grapes to develop lovely full flavours and cool-climate characteristics with enticing notes of dried herbs, cashew, subtle grapefruit and mineral nuances. The famous Beechworth region is known for its iconic wines, with much of this attributed to the altitude, granitic soil and climate. The vineyard is located on the Beechworth-Wangaratta Road at 400m altitude, with the Chardonnay planted on the South East facing slope. Given its proximity to some of Beechworth's finest vineyards, the Chardonnay is already showing the exciting potential of this site with vibrant complexity and lengthy finish, showcasing well-balanced oak and distinguished character from cooler mesoclimate.
