Peter Lehmann 8 Songs Shiraz 2022 is part of the Master’s Collection — a series inspired by significant people and moments in Peter Lehmann’s life, each wine as unique and distinctive as the stories behind them. Named after one of Peter’s favourite musical works, ‘Eight Songs for a Mad King’, this is a Barossa Valley Shiraz of genuine depth and character. Deep crimson with purple hues; rich and fragrant with satsuma plum, blueberry, and dusty cedar; a palate all about texture and mouthfeel, with rich ripe plums, dark chocolate, and a pure, long, savoury finish.

Appearance

Deep crimson with purple hues — the rich, inviting colour of a Barossa Valley Shiraz harvested in the cool of the morning, fermented on skins for up to two weeks, and matured for 18 months in French oak hogsheads. Dense, vibrant, and immediately compelling.

Aroma

Rich and fragrant — abundant satsuma plum, blueberry, and dusty cedar notes. The expressive, layered bouquet of a Barossa Shiraz selected at annual classification tasting and matured in 40% new French oak hogsheads, with the depth and complexity that 18 months of careful barrel ageing delivers.

Palate

All about texture and mouthfeel — rich ripe plums and dark chocolate with a pure, fruited, long savoury finish. The concentration and structure of a Barossa Shiraz fermented on skins for up to two weeks, with the refinement and integration that new French oak and patient maturation bring. A wine of genuine distinction.

Pairs With

Slow-roasted lamb, char-grilled beef, braised short rib, aged hard cheeses, and rich game dishes — the texture, dark chocolate depth, and long savoury finish make 8 Songs Shiraz a deeply satisfying and natural partner for the finest food at the table.

Winemaking Notes

Grapes harvested in the morning for optimal freshness and fruit integrity. Fermented on skins for up to two weeks for maximum colour, tannin, and flavour extraction. Individual components pressed and transferred to barrel for malolactic fermentation. Following MLF, wine batches for 8 Songs were selected at the annual Peter Lehmann classification tasting, then blended and matured for a further 18 months in 40% new French oak hogsheads (60% older oak). The result is a wine of remarkable texture, depth, and a pure, long, savoury finish.

Producer History

Peter Lehmann was one of the great figures of Australian wine — a Barossa Valley legend whose commitment to the region’s growers and winemaking traditions helped define Barossa Shiraz for the world. The Master’s Collection was created to honour the significant people and moments of his life, with each wine as unique and distinctive as the stories that inspired it. Peter had a particular love of the arts, and 8 Songs takes its name from ‘Eight Songs for a Mad King’ — one of his favourite musical works, a piece as bold, dramatic, and unforgettable as the wine itself. A fitting tribute to a man who lived and made wine with the same passionate intensity.
