The 2023 Mystery Cabernet Sauvignon presents a fragrant varietal bouquet of cassis and spice. On the palate, rich blackcurrant flavours dominate, supported by structured tannins that contribute both elegance and length. While Understudy embodies a refined and sophisticated Cabernet style, it retains the characteristic fruit generosity and fullness that define Pertaringa wines. This Cabernet Sauvignon was carefully fermented and matured over 15 months in seasoned French oak, with each parcel treated separately during the winemaking process to preserve its complexity.

'Wonderfully composed and styled, the wine presents aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, tobacco, and elegant oak on the nose. The palate delivers excellent weight and fine flow, splendidly framed by chalky tannins, making it sturdy and robust with a lengthy, satisfying finish.'

Winery & Vintage Info

The winery and its family name is synonymous with South Australian wine since the 1850s and continuing that tradition with this wine, building on the experience and reputation of the predecessors with a modern twist on 170 years of winemaking heritage.

The Cabernet Sauvignon fruit is sourced from three vineyards, the Picnic Ground vineyard (once owned by Thomas Hardy and named after the picnics they used to hold there) located on Kayโ€™s Road, the Osmond familyโ€™s โ€œLeslieโ€ block just outside McLaren Flat and Tintookie vineyard located in Blewitt Springs. The combination of blocks from these different sub-sections of McLaren Vale allow for wonderful diversity and richness of flavour.

The Picnic Ground and Tintookie are on Maslin Sands, aged between 34 and 56 million years old and the Leslie block is on deep alluvial clay from the Holocene era (11,700 years old).
Harvest Date: 30 March (Picnic Grounds), 11 April (Leslie's) and 12 April (Tintookie).
