The 2021 Mike Press Sauvignon Blanc fruit were picked at exactly the right baumé to ensure that the final wine is clean and crisp, while providing good amounts of fruit aromas. The 2020 vintage shows a balance of green characters without showing anything overzealous, think green pea and kiwi fruit on the palate to start and lovely acidity and crunch to make the finish clean and savoury.

Situated in the Kenton Valley between Lobethal and Gumerachawith, is the 23 hectares of vines, and in a normal year, grow 300 tonnes of fruit. The altitude is high at 480-500 metres.

Mike is a veteran winemaker, who has been in the business for 40 years. Beginning his career at Penfolds under Max Schubert, then Seppelt, and then Mildara Blass as Chief Winemaker.

In 1998 he planted his vines with the intention and aim of selling grapes to the large wineries, however the timing wasn’t great and Kenton Valley Vineyards came on-stream just as the ‘grape glut’ arrived.

With this, Mike and Judy realised they would have a lot of grapes left over, unless they began making wine for themselves.

The first few vintages were sold as ‘cleanskins’, and quickly sold out every year, building something of a cult following in Adelaide.

The label Mike Press was then born, and has thrived with exceptional value quality wines. The wines frequently excel at shows, especially the local Adelaide Hills Wine Show.
