Tasting Notes

Appearance

A deep ruby hue with brilliant clarity and rich depth, this Apulian Primitivo reflects the exceptional quality of hand-picked fruit from rare Alberello trained vines — a living testament to the ancient winemaking heritage of Apulia, Italy.

Aroma

The nose is sophisticated and layered, with rich ripe fruit and warm spice at the fore. Grape withering on the vine, encouraged by the coastal sea wind, adds further aromatic complexity, creating a bouquet that speaks eloquently of Apulia’s unique terroir and centuries-old Alberello tradition.

Palate

Full-bodied and generous, the palate delivers rich ripe fruit and subtle spice with beautifully soft tannins. Six months in French oak lends structure and elegance, with vanilla notes emerging gracefully on the finish. The result is a wine of outstanding depth and complexity, shaped by meticulous grape selection and slow, patient maturation.

Winemaking Notes

Masso Antico Primitivo 2024 is crafted using the ancient Alberello vine training method, typical of the Mediterranean area of Italy and now very rare. Developed to compensate for the lack of water and the very hot climate of Apulia, the Alberello system represents an important part of the cultural and oenological heritage of the region. Rigorous hand-picking is followed by meticulous selection of de-stemmed grapes. Grape withering on the vine, favoured by the sea wind, concentrates flavour and intensity before slow maturation in French oak barrels for approximately six months. The result is an outstanding full-bodied wine with soft tannins that release vanilla notes on the finish.

Vintage Conditions

The 2024 vintage in Apulia delivered the warm, dry Mediterranean conditions that Primitivo thrives in. The region’s characteristic heat and sea winds created ideal circumstances for the ancient Alberello vine training method, with the lack of water encouraging deep root systems and concentrated fruit. Grape withering on the vine, favoured by the coastal breeze, further intensified flavour and complexity. The growing season produced deep ruby fruit with rich, nuanced character — ripe fruit, subtle spice and exceptional depth — that, combined with Masso Antico’s meticulous hand-picking and six months in French oak, resulted in a full-bodied wine of sophistication and finesse.
