Heartland Directors’ Cut Shiraz 2021 is a premium Langhorne Creek Shiraz crafted from hand-picked fruit selected from the region’s finest Shiraz vineyards — chosen for the consistent intensity and texture of their fruit. Deep purple, almost indigo; lifted fresh fruit with white pepper, fennel, nettle, and a faint white truffle note on the nose; soft and forward on the palate with blackberry jam, dark chocolate mousse, and ripe persimmon; and spice notes on the finish that develop beautifully in the glass.

Appearance

Deep purple, almost indigo — the rich, dense colour of a premium Langhorne Creek Shiraz from hand-picked fruit, night harvested and fermented with Rhône isolate yeast for 11 days on skins before 14 months of maturation in French and American oak hogsheads.

Aroma

Lifted fresh fruit guided by the spirit of white pepper, fennel, and nettle — with a faint white truffle note that adds intrigue and complexity. The expressive, layered bouquet of a Langhorne Creek Shiraz from a cool, long growing season where natural acidity was the gift of the lake breeze and harvesting continued until mid-April.

Palate

Soft and forward — dominated by blackberry jam and ripe persimmon, with dark chocolate mousse and spice notes on the finish that develop beautifully in the glass. The 60% new oak in 2021 ensures the fruit remains the focus and the guiding light of the wine, with the French and American oak hogsheads adding structure and depth without overwhelming the cool-climate character.

Pairs With

Slow-roasted lamb, char-grilled beef, duck, aged hard cheeses, and rich game dishes — the soft tannins, blackberry jam depth, and spice finish make Heartland Directors’ Cut Shiraz a deeply satisfying and natural partner for the finest food at the table.

Winemaking Notes

Fruit hand-picked from selected Langhorne Creek Shiraz vineyards chosen for consistent intensity and texture, using the strictest pruning techniques. Harvested at night and crushed to small open-top stainless steel fermenters. After 24 hours of skin contact, fermentation commenced with Rhône isolate yeast. Following 11 days of cool fermentation on skins with three pump-overs daily, the wine was transferred to French and American oak hogsheads for 14 months maturation. In 2021, new oak was limited to 60% to ensure the fruit remained the focus in this cooler year.

Vintage Conditions

Good ground cover from winter rains bolstered the vineyards through a warm and dry spring. Problem-free flowering led to even berry development and a stable, relatively easy vintage. Natural acidity was once again the gift of the cool lake breeze — Langhorne Creek had cooler nights than the coolest parts of the Adelaide Hills, delivering a long growing season with harvesting continuing until mid-April. Above-average yields and exceptional fruit quality made 2021 a vintage of genuine distinction for Heartland Directors’ Cut.

Producer History

Heartland Wines was founded with a singular focus on the Langhorne Creek region — one of South Australia’s most underrated and distinctive wine regions, where the cool lake breeze from Lake Alexandrina moderates the warm continental climate and delivers natural acidity, long growing seasons, and fruit of remarkable intensity and texture. The Directors’ Cut range represents the pinnacle of the Heartland offering — hand-picked, night-harvested, and crafted with the precision and care that the region’s finest Shiraz vineyards deserve. Langhorne Creek at its most compelling.
